problem with back up lights

i have a problem with my back up lights. they seem to stay on when the headlihts or parking lights are on. weird thing is they dont do it all the time just sometimes after reversing they wont go off, then a little while later they will shut off and not come back on untill i put it in reverse again, but then they will just stay on after putting in drive. i think there must be a short somewhere, but not sure where to start.

Question bu lights

Sounds like a problem with the switch. Have you checked/replaced it?

you mean the head light switch. or is there some sort of switch that tells the backup lights to come on?

Think the back up lights utilize the neutral safety switch. I have not read up on how to adjust. I'm not at home to check a diagram but I do not remember the reverse lights drawing power from the headlight switch.... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...il+light+wires
Found a post by Cobalt on how to adjust.

The backup lights are controlled by the neutral saftey switch.

It's located on the steering shaft, just before the firewall, under the dash.

Over time the contacts in the switch do wear and become sloppy. Also the piece in the switch that moves is plastic and can break.
