It's not broken. They're supposed to do that so you don't lock yourself out. Chevy trucks all did that back then, same as many Ford cars & trucks did. You have to use the key to lock it. I always thought it was mighty strange that you could lock a car without a key, but then I was raised around Fords.

Could be that someone else had the door apart before.
The lock issue could be reinstalled wrong.

Does the window drop a little when you crank it up or down. If so your window crank gear is bad. Replace it with new one, junk yard one not worth the trouble. You can buy that whole piece (regulator) new for under $75. As for the door thats the way they supposed work, you cant lock it then close it cause it unlocks its self, passenger side same way has to be lock from inside, but if you close it and use key it should lock. If not then something outta whack somewhere.

Its not to hard to get out. There should be four big phillips screws in a rectangle pattern, one on top and one on bottom of crank shaft and two more three or four inches down. Make sure you roll window all the way up and wrap some strong tape from inside of window over the door to the outside of window to hold the glass up. Then take crank handle off and then those four screws now the fun part. There should be a small gap in the middle of the metal track on the bottom of the glass, this is where one of the regulator roller has to come thru. Then drop it out and out of your way and do the other roller same way, I think the last roller will go out either end also, been awhile since I done mine. Once you look at it you will see what im talking bout, then once you get it loose from window fold scissors flat and bring it thru the hole in the door, believe it or not it will fit thru this hole, if you hold you tongue right. Anything else I missed guys, its not as hard as it looks. I thought the samething when I first done mine, there no way to get to that out. You should look at new trucks with power window motor on it, makes these old truck look easy. Maybe this info will help, or somebody on here can add anything I missed. Like I siad been awhile since I done mine, I've done couple newer trucks since.

I've done a few of these(3), it is not that easy to get the mechanism free. Sometimes it will slip right out of window track and sometimes, like the last time i did it, it took alot of arm scraping to manuever inside the door. Anyways, I alway grease the gears and mechanism with lots of heavy duty bearing grease so that it holds. Sprays are short lived and require more frequent lubing in my opinion
