I have heard people are putting different gearing in the older steering boxes to speed them up. I wanted to gear it closer to a new truck so you don't have to turn it as much. Does any one know where I can buy these parts. Thanks

I have a 69 Chevy Pick up. Would like to get a quick ratio PS box. What are my options? Thanks Frank Frank, I can supply you with a 16:1 ratio gearbox (yours should be a 24:1) for $189.00 exchanged. + shipping. Includes a lifetime warranty. Thanks Chip 417-864-6676 [This message has been edited by Frank_Zeller (edited February 28, 2002).]

Cool, my nerdy steering is mocked by people who only drive newer cars, they say it is way too squishy, it would be awesome to have a quicker turner!!!

Also might want to check out
http://www.agrperformance.com/agr They have a variable ratio gear box for our trucks, supposedly gives the feeling of modern steering. Also has 3-1/2 turns lock to lock over the stockers of 4-1/2 turns lock to lock...Either way, goodluck. AGR parts are more expensive and I think they only have a 90-day warranty...but ask. ------------------ 71 Chevy C-10 SWB Fleetside WAS:307w/3-on-the-tree NOW:350TBI/700R4/3.73 See it at www.prismnet.com/~grzanich

AGR is the place to look. They have "Variable" ratio steering boxes. At about $350.00 they aint cheap!! But you get what you pay for. Darren

I dont think that is that expensive for a steering box, plus converting a truck to one that is controlable is worth a little extra. I know I let my friends drive my very nice longhorn, and they all ask me if the front end is all loose. I tell them no, that is the factory mush steering. I would pay that for tighter steering.

save money??? I haven't checked on this yet, but I understand the steering gear from a mid 70's lwb crew cab will fit our pickups, they should have a better ratio, a buddy of mine did it on his rock crawler(74 blazer)

Re: steering box gearing question
I have a 72 with BBC, th400, np205. The PO did the swap and pounded the heck out of the fire wall. It fits, but tight. I have been told by another builder that the right way is to move the motor and drive train forward by 2", then no need for a body lift.
Also, the headman headers either require a 1/4"x2" chop out of the top frame rails, or move the motor forward to clear the frame rail. I recently bought tall covers for roller rockers, but have not gotten the motor back from rebuild, so no news on that one. My motor should be back next week. ![]() see the photo below for fire wall mod, not a great photo. |

Re: steering box gearing question
Guys - the 73 to 82(?) pick-up PS gear is usually variable ratio and 3 1/2 turns lock to lock - the same as the AGR boxes - and a lot cheaper. There is no difference in 1/2 or 3/4 T boxes. I am not sure when GM changed to the metric fittings - it may have been after 82.
My recommendation is to pick one up at your local junk yard. Look for a clean one - no leaks.

Re: steering box gearing question
I have the Early Classic quick ratio box. It took out a full turn lock to lock, but again, not cheap. And yes a 2wd box all the way up to 87 will work but after a certain year the lines are metric.
