Yes, it's supposed to be inside the frame rail.

If you don't have a picture when I get home, I'll snap one for you and post it.

hmm....can i get a pic of it installed on a vehicle? the linkage is on the outside of my frame right now...i have the piece that bolts to the frame...but i dont think i have the spring off it....and i dont know that i have the trans piece or the piece between them...will the ones off an 86 chevy work? i have that parts truck. it looks like if the linkage goes on the right side of the frame my headers will hit it....and he LAST thing i need right now is to have to buy headers

86 won't work, it's different.

The linkage goes between the frame and the transmission. It does not go outside the framerails. Your headers should clear it all.

TX Firefighter not to be a PINA but after looking at your pics I went and looked at mine. I have the spring and clip that yours doesnt have and the spring you have I dont have. I then looked in the service manual and it showes a pic like mine. No spring like yours.

There's something to that.

See, I spent plenty of years working for the Postal Service as a mechanic on mail trucks before I changed careers. Mail trucks have a similar linkage and they use the bigger spring, so I added one to my linkage. I think it works as well as, or better than, the original type, like your truck must still have.

Frankly, we threw away buckets of those springs, so I was able to source them free of charge, so I used one on the truck.

I tried to post the disclaimer in red on that second picture that it's not factory correct.

You might notice, the linkage isn't totally stock either. I spent a Saturday afternoon completely rebuilding the pieces. I welded up the holes and slack and remachined everything so it would fit perfectly. Then, I replaced the "pin" on the frame bracket with a new, harder steel, pin that shouldn't wear as much as the original.

I am obsessive compulsive about such things. I have never knowlingly said the words "good enough" in my life referring to any of my work. My old orange truck had sealed ball bearings supporting a billet steel linkage. It worked smooth.

I would have liked to see that!!!

I was going to comment on the cleanliness of your linkage, just to give you a hard time, Now I know why.. Da## Nice job Kevin... I would rather have something that I know will stay on then factory correct.. But then again,, Look at my truck..
