330hp crate worth it in a shortbed 1/2 ton?

youve probably read my post bout my engine being toast

i was looking at the stock 250hp crate for $1475 especially since you get a 3yr/50 warranty, but now im debating spending the extra $1000 on the 330 hp motor. but in realty what can i expect out of one of these trucks? my truck is a 1/2 ton shortbed th350 and 3.73 posi. i dont really want to spend that much money on the motor if its still going to be a low 15 second truck after i put in the 330hp engine, id rather just save $1000 and have a 16 second stock truck with a 3 yr warranty on the engine. whaddya guys think?

Check the torque ratings for both engines. That is more important than HP. I think the $1000 could be better spent than on 80 hp.

thats what im thinking as well. if it was a 3,000lb nova we were talking about then id definetly want the extra ponies but im not sure if its worth spending it on a boat of a truck

Like I said, check the toque on both those engines. How often are you going to be running in the peak HP range in a truck? not often at all.

ok numbers are 330/380 on the crate HO motor and 250/304 on the stock motor. allthough chevy high performan got 265/323 outta the stock motor when they added an edelbrock intake and headers, whic im already running. i believe the numbers on the HO motor are already with performance exhaust and intake manifold

What kind of shape is the motor in that you have now......is it rebuildable? You might want to check with a couple different machine shops to see what it will cost to have that one rebuilt (if it's a good casting). I've heard that the castings of the basic Goodwrench crate motor aren't the greatest.
Remember this, if you go with the basic crate motor, any engine mods might void the warrantee.

I guess it depends on what you want out of the motor. Weigh all of your options and decide from there. I've decided to get my motor rebuilt.

ive already decided against rebuilding, i shopped around and the prices to rebuild around here in southern california were outrageous, same ammount if not more than a new stock motor. and they dont offer 3yr/50k warrantys.

250hp/304tq is plenty for your truck, I'd spend the extra $1000 elsewhere too.

I would go for the crate engine too. Torque ratings aren't that far off.

if you buy the 250 hp motor and put a set of vortecs on it, and maybe a small cam..... you will be over the 330 hp rating and still under the extra 1000.00
