I just pulled my 72 cab and bed off today(sent it to the recyclers). What is a common stripper to clean paint and rust off the frame?

call your local sandblaster. it will be around $2-300. this is the only realistic way to do it correctly that i know of.

What about a wire wheel on a grinder after a coat of hydrochloric acid?

Acid will eat rust, it will also eat the metal if you leave it on there, but it won't do dirt or grease.

i've used hydrocloric on alm before. nasty stuff, i won't recommend it. it will burn your skin in a second and probably ruin anything it splashes on. if you use it wear chemical resistant gloves, googles, and work in a well ventilated area. if it splashes on your skin rinse will fresh cool water immediatly, especially if some runs down inside your gloves. i don't know how it may react to ashpalt or concrete.

Well i used some on my 64falcon's fuel tank. It cleaned it like nothing i have ever seen! It was the recommendation of the grandpa! I used a ventilator,half a gallon,small chain and made sure i was in the alley! Dumped the exess in a another empty jug. dont know where to get rid of it! He used it on cleaning house plumbing pipes.

id stick to something a little more skin friendly. for a gas tank where your not scrubbing its fine but on a frame you have to scrub and just get in there. oven cleaner is better and the sand blaster is best

Hydrochloric acid is to tough to control, but it is cheap. I prefer using phosphoric acid, it come in a gel form. Easier to place on the metal and has less problems with neutralization.

Look for a company called Redi-strip. They can do a 5 part bath that will kill all rust, and strip the paint off. If you don't have a Redi-strip available, use muriatic acid. You can get it at your local Home Depot or Lowes. Its normally pretty dilute and will work well on the rust. Old fashioned naval jelly will work too, but I've not had luck with it. Takes too long.
