test run engine witout power steering connected?

Sorry for all the questions lately. I'm getting close to firing this thing up and am outside the realm of my experience.

for the sake of a test engine run, can I get away without hooking up the power steering pump? That is, avoid installing the power steering gear, lines, and fluid. Or will this damage the pump? In truth, I'm trying to avoid buying the power steering gear until I'm ready for it.

Leave the belt off of the p/s pump. You don't want to run it dry of fluid.

How can you route the belt to avoid the ps pump - I can't see a route... I guess the only thing I really need running is the water pump?

What is a power steering gear? There should be 1 belt that drives the power steering pump. Just don't put the belt on the power steering pump.

In my case I have just the one belt that drives everything, thus I cannot leave out the power steering belt. Maybe I just have to wait for the gear box...

I've never seen a factory setup that used only 1 belt and had powersteering.

You could slip a hose over each end of the steering hoses,and clamp it tight,just to fire it off.I wouldn't run it a long time like this.

At least it will circulate the fluid,and not burn up the pump.

it's an 04 crate motor with serpentine system. Brainchild's idea may work for a quick test, if I can clamp it down tight enough.

when i broke my small block in on the stand i ran the pump with fluid in it. put the pressure hose in a jug of flluid along with areturn hose to the pump and run it. doesnt build much pressure or heat doin it this way. plu sits a good way to flush out your pump

couldn't I just loop a hose from the pressure line around to the return line? That way there'd be no pressure built up but it would just recirculate the fluid to keep from heating up, right?
