Camaro 5 speed

When I converted my truck to a 350/700R4 I didn't like the idea of an automatic. The motor is a crate engine, but after that all I could afford was a junkyard 700R4. It recently blew after 6,000 miles. OD and 3rd went suddenly on the highway...with no slippage warning I might add!!! The truck did have a manual 3 speed, but they suck. I searched local junkyards, in SC, for about 3 months during the suspension/motor build. I couldn't find a single 5spd manual out of a 90's Chevy truck. After I installed the tranny I thought about the 5sp in a v-6 s-10 or camaro. I don't believe these trannys would hold up in my truck. I REALLY wanted a 6 speed and I did find one in a junkyard....for $2,000 So that was out.... I really want a manual with OD back in my truck, could y'all help me with what would fit? What if the clutch is hydraulic? What would I need to do to install the hydraulic clutch? Looks like there isn't much room with the power brake booster in the way. Would I need a bellhousing conversion kit? I know I'd probably have to find a new driveshaft...already shortened for 700R4. Where could I get a crossmember and out of what? Will the automatic crossmember work? Will a 3.73 gear be ok with this transmission or is it too low? I know thats a lot of questions, but I love my truck and I miss the manual.

I know that the mid 80's to early 90's Camaro 5 speeds will not stand up to a strong engine. That's why Chevy only put a 5 spd behind 305's in the 80's, the 350 only had an auto. That's all I know, sorry can't help you with any of how to make one work in your truck.

i'm in the same spot, got a 350 in a '67 wanted a 6speed, couldn't find one, thought about the 5speed then someone gave me a 700r4. the 700 is a great trans and i got most of the stuff to put it in, but i want a manual. you know... "real hot rods are driven with both hands and both feet" and all that.

someone told me that i could source most of the needed parts from an LT1 camaro (bellhousing included), but i don't know what to do about the clutch linkage. the 3.73 all depends on overall tire diameter. the truck could be converted to hydrl with the use of street rod parts to locate the brake and clutch booster & res under the floor, but i thing there's a cheaper way.

I have a T5 from a V6 S10 in my 68 behind a 350. I'm right at the edge of the torque limit. The T5 is rated up to 290 foot pounds. I do not race or tow or haul anything. The Camaro version won't work without modification as the tailpiece is angled and the shifter is too far back unless you have buckets. The S10 version puts the shifter in the correct position to allow use of the bench seat. You can learn a lot at www.inliners.org and www.jtr.com the inliners like the T5 behind the inline 6 and JTR (jags that run) is a racing group. I had to make a spacer to mate the T5 to the bellhousing and used an Astro clutch kit with the stock mechanical linkage.

I have a tremec 5 spd in my truck. I used the stock linkage. I kinda wanted to avoid having to sort out a hydraulic set up. The tremec has multiple shift locations to accomodate many vehicles. I had to switch clutch discs from 10 to 26 spline, have my drive shaft shortened and I have the bell housing that mounts to the frame with nothing under the tranny. As for rear gears, I have 3.54 with 275/60/15 tires(about 28" tall) and my cruise rpm is 2100 at 70. As stated above, stay away from the Camaro T-5's.

You can try Keislerauto.com. They specialize in complete kits for vintage vehicles

Huck has the nv5000 or what ever, the mid 90's truck...not a T5. He managed to make the hyd clutch set up work, pretty sweet set up, i drove it a couple years ago and it was damn nice..

lol, there's a few 5 speed threads going on right now...I've mentioned that the T5 is crap elsewhere.
We're taking bets on when yours will blow up!

That's OK though, i have a Th350 bolted to the caddy engine in the one ton....so who am I to talk? (although the Th350 wil take more crap than any T5. )

Thank you shorty, me and a bud where debating on if his early 80's camaro had a 305 or 350, I said 305 just cause it looks stock.. he tried telling me 350... so of course..ok We'll race...but the tranny "blew" (yeah they are junk) while I tried limping it hope for him... hell of ride when the tranny seizes doin 45...haha of course...can't move tranny seized car right...so..lol. jacked the camaro up in the middle of the road, tore apart the rear u-joint to move the car... unforgetable night.
