Well, I purchased some parts on e-bay, and got directed to this fine forum you guys are keeping here. I was all into the spirit of getting back into building 4-wheeled machines, but I keep hitting brick walls. So, here's what I got.

Purchased a 1969 Chevrolet Custom-10, according to the VIN came with a 3 speed and a V-8.350. Well, start trying to put parts on it, and none of them fit. Tonight, I finally crawl up in there and get the number off the block. 14010202. Early 80's passenger car 305. Teeee-riffic. I may as well have a 4.3 in a full size.

Wait. I got one of those too. Let's just start the slow Chevy house around here.

Anyways, I have a few questions for you guys, and I'm really just looking for some ideas to play with. I've got a 1965 350 4bolt, been sitting since sometime last century, hell, I can't even remember if it has a single or a double barrel carb on it, it's been so long. It's out of a 1965 C20 monster, with the ridiculous gears (5.14:1 or something), so it's a low end engine, and I'm not too worried about it on the tall geared 3 speed. Here's my dillema: I was planning on putting one of the 350's on a stand and building a fire breather out of it, however now I have a 305 and a 350. The 305 is so tired it can hardly run the water pump, and I don't think it's too wise to put any more money into it.

Also, the '65 doesn't have a distributor, fuel pump, and a handful of other things. How close to compatible are these two blocks?

Forgive me, I got into motorcycles heavily and have forgotten all my chevrolet knowlege. I shall regain it, surely.

hopefully i am not stupid, but i thought that they didnt make 350s in 65, that they started in 69 or something

all small block chevy stuff is interchangeable heads intake distributors fuel pumps water pumps bracketry. wouldnt reccomend using the 305 heads on a 350 though

Ya know, I don't know. The truck I pulled the engine from was a 1965, all was SUPPOSEDLY stock, but I have no way of knowing. I guess I'll find out this weekend when I go get the engine.

Anybody know anything abotu this?

Welcome from WI. If that's actually a 350 in the 65, then it was put there. Maybe it's a 327? Either way, ya, everything will interchange.

I have to agree with 68w. I don't know for sure what year the 350 was introduced, but I am certain it was not as early as '65. I think it might have been as late as '70.

350 came out in 69 for the big cars and trucks. I think it was dropped into Camaros in 67 or 68 though. Welcome to the board.

I agree, i think the 350 in trucks started in '69...everything will interchange...just changed the 305 out in my '85 for a 350 and only had to get a new flywheel

Everyone is right, the first generation of chevy "truck" 350's was '69-'78. You may want to run the numbers on that engine too. A guy at work was told his '69 was stock but he purhcased something for the motor and it didn't fit. So he had the numbers run and it was really a 327 out of a late 60's corvette, can't remember the year at the moment. Changing the 305 to a 327/350 isn't difficult at all. Actaully, turned out to be a 1973! Casting numbers say it could be a 302/327/350, but date stamp says November 13, 1973. Just finished reassembling it today, hopefully get it put in tommorow after work.

Ah, but it didn't! You are correct, sir. The VIN told me it came witha 350. The sawed off colum shift handle, and the GM1 cast three speed transmission with a floor shift insinuated it came with a 3 speed manual.

If the second digint of the VIN is an E, then it came with a V-8, but that could be a 307, 350, or a 396. (last year for the 396)
If the option sheet shows no engine option, then a 307 was the engine originally in your truck.

It shows an E, again, assuming it has the original badging on it, it has the 350 badges. The intake and carb that were on the 305 match up to numbers that were put on a 1969 350, but again, it could be anything, really, including the badging. Unfortunately, there is no build sheet, and the glove box is gone. Any other ideas where I can get some more information off the truck itself?

Don't toss the 305,shoot the crank will work in a 350,so will all the brackets,pumps,and ect.
Kinda hard to second guess the truth about a 30 year old truck,I would say it had a 350 in it
