Opinions on Goodyear Wrangler MT/R's
i am thinking about getting the MT/R's for my '71 1/2 ton and was wanting some feedback as to how they performed, road noise, tread life etc. i drive probably 50/50 onroad/off road and drive through lots of snow in the winter time.
Thanks Tom |

Several of my family members work for Goodyear so I say this with honesty. Every Goodyear 'Mud Tire' I have ever owned sucked. Their 'AT' tires are about average and their passenger tires were above average. Note: my rating in this example is based solely on treadlife. The MT/R perform exceptionallly well in its intended environment but they don't last for $hit on the road. JMO, take it for what it's worth.

I have them on my 95 Yukon and am very impressed with them. They have about 35K or so on them right now and are not near their tread bars. The work very well in the little snow we get here. They of course aren't Boggers but they do fine in the mud that I find. On the road they are fairly loud, enought to bug some at highway speeds. They get your attention if you have to do an emergency stop - make the truck squirm some. Like any mud tire, you will regret it if you don't rotate them as directed.
Would I buy them again for my Yukon, probably not, will probably step back to an all terrain. If I had more time to play in the mud with this truck I think I would buy these tires again but this truck mainly stays on the road. But when I'm in the mud or snow I don't like getting stuck so I tend to want a more aggressive tire.

I'll take a good set of B.F. Goodrich or Mickey Thompson's before I would even consider Goodyears EVER again !!!!
I had a set of Goodyears go thin in 30,000 miles. I had 50,000 on my Goodrich tires, and they still had enough tread to go another 20 to 30,000.

I've been running the Wrangler AT's on my company truck. Lot of highway miles and quite a bit of off road (South Texas mud, Louisiana mud, Oklahoma mountains). They do wear. I'm pretty hard on them and I get roughly 35,000 before I replace them. May just be me but, I like a good bit of tread when I', heading into muddy areas! Would I change? Probably. The Goodrich AT tire is pretty good for multi-use. I was in a Firestone store the other day picking up a guy that was getting some work done on his truck. I was looking at some Bridgestones that looked pretty decent for the off road use (don't remember the model). I definitely do not care for Firestones though. I've had a few pair that were on vehicles that I had bought. Pure crap. Bad wearage, bad water dissipation.

I've heard that the Goodyears are bad for treadwear. I really can't comment though, I've never driven them, and no matter what tire brands I get they need to be replaced after 2 years with the way I drive. Cooper redesigned their STTs, they look pretty similar to the MT/Rs and are probably a good deal cheaper too.

I like the look of the tread on the Coopers. I might give them a try on the next round.

I just finished 45000 miles with my Goodyear MT's They are on a 350 Ford V-10 Super Duty.... Heavy truck, that Pulls a 4 horse trailer quite often off the normal roads... I have never had a flat tire with them.
I have never been a Goodyear type of guy, But I replaced them with the same thing last month. |
