71 was the first year of side terminals for the truck, everything prior uses the top post battery.

Interstate makes a batthery that has BOTH. Works well in colder areas - the top used for jump starts on furds and dudges.

most bettery companies make at least one model with both top and side terminals. Makes sence when you consider there are only 3 comapnies (in the states) that make batteries.
They are also cool for Winches, hook the side terminals to the engine, and top posts for the winch for a better contact. |

Found on some that the terminals on top are too close to the fender when installed.
But in your case either should be fine.

My '70 had top-terminals stock. On the last battery I got (free for life from Firestone ) the closest top-only they had didn't want to fit...so I ended up with one of the Interstates with both. It's coming in handy for the LS1 swap since I'll probably end up going to side-terminals now.

There are advantages to both...the side post is way more likely to stay clean. No green corrosion building up, however, when it s\does start, you don't see it, not untill it is way out of hand anyways. You can safely place wrenches on top of a side post, less likely to short out in an accident, very difficult to mess up as long as you use a 5/16 wrench and not a 6 inch crecent or vice grips. They are a total pain in the 12 bolt to hook up jumper cables to, or battery chargers, harder to run a wire straight from the battery for what ever reason you may wanna do it, and there is always some idiot who ruins the 5/16 head with chanel locks thinking he can get it tight.
Mine has 2 interstate side post batteries. |
