1 ton/ 3/4 ton to 1/2 ton conversion? anyone done it?

i am planning on converting my 88 1 ton crew cab dually to all 1/2 ton. the rear is going to be easy because i already have a 9" F$%D shortened with a 5 on 5 bolt patern. but the front i am a little confused. is there a difference between one ton, three quarter ton, and half ton ball joints? if there is then is the difference in the size of the taper AND the upper and lower control arms? or is it just one or the other?
