air horn setup in the gmc-pics

hey guys i thought i might post some pics of the air horn setup i got in the gmc...i used a 1 gallon tank with a 12v air compressor i mounted on top of the tank, then 1/4 inch plastic line from the tank to a manual switch mounted under the dash then back out to the horn. turned out pretty good i think, id never do this to the 67 but since the 71 is my beater/driver i thought it would be a fun project...

oh and hey andy that last pic is for you! lol

I like the air horns, had a set on my 86. It was a tri horn setup, powered by a little electric compressor. It was actually pretty damn loud when you hit the switch...Later Mike

Very cool! If I may ask, where did you find the stuff for the setup? Does the compressor turn on&off according to pressure or how?

i got the tank at a store here in town, same with the compressor, the compressor i plug into the lighter when i want to fill the tank, i have a tank pressure gauge and when its low i just plug the compessor into the lighter and it starts up and when i hit 120 psi in the tank i unplug it and tuck it back up under the dash. the horn i got at a local wreckers for semi trucks, and the hoses and fittings i got at western star parts shop

A word of advice from someone who ran a similar system, get 2 of the longest (trumpet part) horns you can get that will fit under the hood, the longer horns have a deeper tone and sound the best in my opinion anyway.

Along the lines of the topic, but a bit different....knew a trucker who put a set of Diesel Locomotive horns on the right side, between the r/f tire and the right side saddle tank....you know the triple horns that they use? That is my dream....to have a set on my school bus. That way, those people who "didn't see 40-ft of chrome yellow school bus" would remember the sound of those train horns in their rear view mirror!!

Nice set up.

this reminds me of my friend Sandy's old &79 Silverado, he had big rig horns (two) mounted on the roof his truck with a pull cord dangling down of course, then he had the airtank mounted in the box, man those were fun to piss off the teacher that gave me an F on my english exam at 3:30 am

be careful with those horns from the trains. we have a large truck from the rail road comes in once in a while with one of those on it. one day I pulled the cord inside the closed shop. NEVER AGAIN!

I thought it would be neat also to have dual sets of air horns. I just have the cheap little electrical compressors, but with the two of them going at once they are very loud. The only problem is that they both blow at different frequencies; they just sound goofy, but air horns are not a real serious thing anyhow.
