Found good price for 3 spoke wheel..
For anyone considering a 3 spoke wheel like in the pic below, I discovered Early Classic sells a complete 3 spoke wheel kit with black grip, horn contacts, horn cap, and mounting hub for $225.00 (price updated). This wheel is different from the Grant 969 model. Grant is deeper dish and the spoke "slices" extend farther into the grip.
Pic.

That's a sharp looking wheel! That's the style I'd like for my old 72. Are the spokes chrome or aluminum or what? Also, what is the diameter and the dish in relation to the stock wheel at 17"? And my last question, what is the black rim made out of? I know the Grant ones are foam, but this one looks more like a plastic or something a bit more durable.

Early Classic told me that wheel had a 4 1/2 inch dish, but it doesn't look like it in the picture.

Spokes are brushed aluminum. This wheel and the Grant 969 look very similar but are not the same. The ECE is shallower and has different spoke design. ECE told me this is the wheel they used on their resto of a 72 Cheyenne "This Old Truck" on their website.
The Grant 969 wheel is 15" in diameter with a 4-1/8" dish: The ECE wheel looks to have less dish and is 15 1/2 inches I think:

I am guessing the grip is made of plastic. I am sure it will outlast the Grant, but it is also a bit more expensive. Muddpile, whatever you do don't buy this wheel from RPM. I hate slamming them but they want $399 just for the wheel while ECE wants $150. Even with exchange RPM wants double. Making a living is one thing, but that is just

Actually, you can't get much of anything for a Vette without a Swiss bank account it seems like.

Don't worry HeavyD, I refuse to deal with RPM. Ever since they quoted me a price of $2000 for new leather for the seats of my vette I've never went back. So it is $225 for everything I need to install the wheel? And that's in US funds correct? I've also been looking into a couple different Grant ones with leather wrapped grips in a 14" diameter or so. I think 15" would look a little better in the big dash of my old truck.

Ya, $225 comes with all you need to get it on and functioning. It will come with a hub that is slightly larger in diameter than the column, but if that doesn't bother you than you are good to go. I am going to try a 67-68 camaro hub because it is supposed to be the same size as our truck column. If you are wondering what I mean by a little larger, check this pic out of their truck using their hub kit:

No. Just black. You can find old 70's Buick wheels like that in colors. I've seen red, tan, and light blue. I've also seen them painted to match. But I don't think they hold up too good.

Not trying to be a stick in the mud, but the repro wheels look nice, but have harder plastic rim, there's no comparison to the original cushion grip wheel, and the repro wheels are half the weight of the originals, there just not comfy on the hands
I can get you an excellent original wheel in most colors w/hub, horn button and cap for $150 And dyeing them does'nt last long, plus it looks cheesy Last edited by 72dually; 01-14-2005 at 01:09 AM. |

What are the color choices? For me it will be black or a variation of aqua or turquoise. Everything on Truck is turquoise, black, or white. I'll bet that means black as I don't recall ever seeing ANY aqua/turquoise comfort grips back then.
These are used late '60's/early '70's comfort grips? Hows the wear on them? Gotta admit you've peaked my interest.

Lolife99 kindly informed me of the hub differences. The chevelle with the wheel isn't mine..I grabbed a pic off the web to show what the dish looked like. It was at a dealership or something. The truck interior shot came off the ECE website. Nice truck that is. I wondered if the new repro wheels would be the close to the original ones. At least they seem to be better than the Grant 969 wheel..heard a few complaints about that unit.

Speaking of Steering Wheels!!
I am thinking of putting a Le Carra or Budnik steering wheel on my truck .Has anyone put on on their truck and if so where would you recommend buying one from (I'm looking for cheapest) and how do they work, feel etc?

LeCarra wheels are available from many speed shops, and from what I have read the quality is much better than Grant's stuff.

HeavyD,... My Blazer is outside, in the cold, under a car cover,... so I went and looked at my '67 Camaro's repop steering wheel. It has the "metal band" around the edge just like the originals do. I couldn't remember,... so I had to go look.

Lolife, thanks for checking. Gone, I think Tiger Automotive used to sell them, and if not I am sure River City Performance in Winnipeg does. When i have tried R.C.Performance website I get redirected to some crap, so I do not know what is going on or if they are still around. I will check online tonight to see who else sells em.
