Holley. They are not maintenance free, and takes several hours of studying. But to get all your motor is capable of, Holley. For example; my 70's carb is:
650 baseplate
700 body ( with the choke horn milled off )
650 front side metering block
750 rear metering block ( with power valve plugged )
four corner idle circuits
brass floats
big window needle valves
... and alot of tinkering with jets, squirters, front power valve, pump cam timing and profile, ect.
You have never seen a better looking spark plug
And I rebuild it every spring... to keep it clean.

Keep in mind, my 70 screams. The back side pops at 4000 rpm's. No sooner. Rev it to around 7200 r's and yank on the Muncie.

And yes, it was my daily driver for 18 years. It's getting ready for it's 3rd rodsteration.... after the 68 is done.

D@mn, I am running my mouth....

Nice, $209's not bad. $250 was the cost for my 650 (PN4777)

i had a 1407, looked sweet, ran great right out of the box...
then i had to rebuild my top end, motor would start, but wouldn't run, white smoke... changed carbs, tore into the ignition...still f#cked up, drove me ape sh%t...

ended up being a tank of bad gas...
ended up giving the 1407 to my girlfriend's brother for helping me tune it up...
he works at a carb shop, hooked it up to a 4 gas analyzer, tweaked it,jetted it, runs fat now...
didn't notice a difference between the quad or the edelbrock, though the 1407 was prettier...

I have run 3 different carbs on my truck. First, i had a Qjet with a rebuild kit, and it worked OK, but it was too worn out for a rebuild kit to help it. Then i got a reman Qjet, and it also ran OK, but i kept on having lots of problems with getting the damn thing to run right. Now i have a Edelbrock 1406, and love it. I bolted it on, tuned the idle, played with the metering rods a little bit, and it runs great. The electric choke allows me to start it up and drive right off in the winter, without having to stay and warm it up for a minute or two. Howere, with the Q jet i got about 12mpg around town, and maybe 15 on the highway. With the edelbrock, i get 10 mpg around town, and 12-13 on the highway. But, it is worth it for how great it runs, and the extra power i have.

I ran a '69 Pontiac Grand Prix with a Rochestor Quadrajet 4BBL for 10 years.
I ran a Holley 800 DP on a '69 Nova for 5 years with absolutely no problems.
I'm currently running an Edelbrock 1407 750 cfm, with no problems worth mentioning, on a ZZ4 350 CID.

I guess the best solution depends upon your needs.

Well I just have to throw something in here. Looks like most people read the opening line but did not read the post. He wants a carb for four wheeling that works good when the truck is not level. I read the article that 6869704X4 talked about and they tested all the normal carbs and if I remember correctly the edlebrock came in dead last. Q-jet won but it was a new edelbrock q-jet. Carters are the exact same carb as edelbrock, they are both made by weber. Happy Four wheeling.

I will say that I had a edelbrock on a truck once that ran great excpt for the fact that my driveway is on a hill and I couldnt start it on my driveway as it would flood out . I'd have to back it out onto the street and then start it. It was staright out of the box that way and even after adjusting the float level it stayed the same. Not good on hills I would say.

For steep angles I would think that fuel injection is the way to go. As far as carbs, I've had to use different ones, depending on the engine. Edelbrocks work great, but they weren't worth a crap on my blower engine. I now run a single Holley dominator on a custom built base-plate, runs awsome!!

OK with Holley

Ran a Holley 650 on a 300HP 350 for 2 years. Only problem was a stuck float that I replaced from a junk carb I had in the shop. Carb was very responsive and gave me no performance problems whatsoever. Working on a BB now and plan on running a custom built Holley 750. Will let you all know how it goes.

My opinion:
Edelbrocks are great, easy little carbs, that are foolproof, but I run Qjets because the little primaries offer great throttle response and on road fuel mileage, and when the secondaries open up, all the benefits of a big carb.
I have not had good luck with Holley at all.
All around, I pick Qjet, but I did put a edelbrock on my Brother in laws farm truck, becuae I knew it face abuse, and hay, and never tuned. It serves him well.

Edelbrocks are junk!

When it comes to 4wheeling. I have one and it wont go up inclines at all. If I went back to wheeling my truck I would probably go to FI or a new Q-Jet. A Holley with an off road kit is an option.

Carbs

I have used Holley carbs for the last 35 years. They are good carbs but you have to spend some time getting them set up to your vehicle. I have never done off road with a Holley, but I would think vent whisles and placing a piece of tubing between your vent tubes and venting in the center would help any flooding conditions. I have a Demon carb on my truck right now (just had to try one LOL). The Demon has been more problems than any carb I have ever owned to set up. I had to change idle restrictions and air bleeds to to get it to run good on my 383. Like everyone says if you do not like working on carbs Holley is not the one to get.
