Cool Alt question

I got a used Alternator from a friend, It looks like the one that installed on my 350.( External reg.) All I know is that he got it off of a '75 chev. truck w/350. How can I tell if it has an internal reg? And when did they stop the extrenal reg on trucks?

Thanks in advance

Internal regs have a thin two wire plug that goes in the side-look for a small slot with two blades visible.

well it will definetly be an internally regulated alternator if it is on a 75 chev truck, they started putting internally regulated alts on chevys in late 72 and all chevys had that alt in 73. The way you can tell is, the internally regulated alts have a flat rectangular plug on the top and the externally regulated use a square plug

An internal regulated alt will look like this, external regulated ones plug into the back.

internal one looks like the one posted above (even though it doesnt have the right plug) and a external is a square shaped plug with the conectors stacked instead of side by side
