Looking at a 72 C-10 4x4...what should I look for?

My first truck was a 1971 Chevy. Always wanted another...now I have the $$$ and time to get one.

Thursday I'm going to look at a 1972 1/2 ton 4x4. It is a Cheyenne auto with 350. My question to all of you is what should I be looking out for...the good, the bad, the ugly?

I know the rust issues (rocker pannel, cab corner). Are there any quirks / options / things that make one truck better than another? Or make a truck a "must have."

Are there any things that would make me say "heck no, not this truck", aside from tons of rust.

I plan to do much of the work myself -- body, mechanical, engine, etc. Would convert to manual transmission. This will be a project truck. Thanks for the word, Daubs

Cowl rust or inside roof rust is real bad to fix. Make sure the vin, title and frame #'s all match is a good idea. Tilt, tach buckets, tow hooks, AM-FM, shoulder belts are good options. SWB are usually worth more it seems. Randy

If it's rusted in the body look for rust on the frame, Crossmembers and mounting points too. If you can drive it test the brakes good and that includes the e-brake. Try the 4 wheel in each gear range and listen for loud nosies, grinding sounds, ect.. Look for massive leaks and cobbled together wires, all of these thing point to more work on your part.. hence, a lower price if the sellers agrees.

I'm a dork. Title of this thread should be K-10 4x4 not "c" (or did they use that designation back in the day? I know my 82 and 87 were "k")

Turned out to be a bust. Truck was originally scheduled to be in auction on Feb 12th so I called to ask if I could have a look before auction. Owner said the truck wouldn't be in auction because couldn't find title from his deceased brother. I thought this might be a good opportunity to get a truck for low $$$.

Well, it was a completel rust bucket. Bed was shot both inside and out. Drivers side door had to be lifted to shut it. Rocker's were trashed. Did have factory air, and posi, but that is about it.

Back to the drawing board.
