Number on engine.
While I was tinkering on my engine tonight I noticed a number on a pad in the front of the block. The number is 1M0 5MP. What does that number mean?
Thanks

Why is the 302 a valuable motor? I can remember them being very common place.

Mike thanks for the info. The casting number on the back pad is 10066036 and according to mortec it a 350...........2 or 4...Target Master/Goodwrench crate motor, 2-piece rear seal, "Hecho en Mexico"
I wish it was a 302 I thought that number was the model number or something. By the way what is a target master? I did a search on google and just found casting numbers.

My engine-casting number book lists the 3914678 block for my 327 as also applying to 68-69 302 camaro/z28 in addition to other passenger cars and trucks.
A302 is just a de-stroked 327/350 right? It was fairly high reving performance engine for the z28 if I remember.

Blue...the ford 302 is as common as parking lot gravel...and all chevy verses ford stuff asside, a good little motor too.
The Chevy 302 was only built for the first gen camaros, and only installed in Z-28 optioned cars. While it was basicly a destroked 327...it was quite a bit more involved than that. |

By the way what is a target master?
target master was a performance street small block that chevy used to make (or maybe they still do) it was a factory crate motor. it wasn't factory equipment on any car , you had to get them from a chevy dealer. they are pretty good little small blocks for a street engine.

a performance rep[lacement motor?
I thought it was more of a generic replacement motor for anything from the family station wagon to work truck motor. |

I thought it was more of a generic replacement motor for anything from the family station wagon to work truck motor. you could be right about the performance part of the thing there Andy but the only ones of them that i have been around would run like a scaulded dog. (lots of torque and ponies) i have never tried to buy one, so i was assuming the performance part, as far as how chevrolet classified it. i would like to have a new one for the old rust bucket but i have to settle for rebuilding the big block i got from cadiac .... You can buy a Goodwrench engine for about 1200 bucks from your local dealership. They are a good quality, 4 bolt main 350 engine, 100 percent brand new with 3 year 50k mile warranty.
They are dead nuts generic though. Not a performance engine by any means.

I have a crate motor in my lifted 68 and it runs fairly well. IMO any 350 71 and earlier will out run the reg. non-al head crate motors hands down. I have been spoiled by too many GM BBs
so SBs are OK but once you have had a tatse of BB torque, MMM MMM good!

You know Mike, I've heard that stuff about big blocks my whole life.
I built a couple of these trucks with big blocks, one a 396 and the other a 454. It's just not for me. I like small blocks, I can afford small blocks, and they're much easier to do. All the accesories are so much easier to find for a small block. Neither of my big blocks (both bone stock internally) were very impressive.

Note I posted GM BB motors. OLDS 455, Buick 455, Caddy 472+500 and once a 425 Olds in a short bed 79 Chevy. These are more the BB I have used in trucks. I fooled around a lot at Oxford Plains Dragstrip when younger. Chevys can be built up, I did not want to spend a lot so I went with the other GM BBs. Now I do keep the original small blocks in the trucks and agree with you 100% on your opinion on small blocks. Thanks for your input Kevin.

I have put many Targetmaster 366 in school buses and the Targetmaster IS just a very nice crate engine, not performance but easy to install. Its pretty much complete less intake and accessories.
