Hey Robb, I've heard that the only differences are the holes in the sides for the fenders, and possibly some of the crossbraces, but otherwise the same from 55 to 87.
Edit: Oh yea, and the steps, of course.

Just about all the holes are different for the fenders, taillight mounts and the wiring harness grommets. The cross braces are differnt and the rear frame mounts (spot welded to the rear box frame are different). The front box are different and 2.5 inches too short as well as the front stake pockets. I am modifying one now to use on my '67 stepside and am finding differences at just about every turn. The inside dimensions are the same as well as the tailgates, and box fronts. The mods are not bad but still take work.
Here is a picture of the box front that I am modifying. Blue is the '77 and burgandy is the '67. I had to cut the part from an old box to weld to the '77 box. You can see how the stake pocket is too short as well and will need mods.

Physical dimensions are the same, but as was mentioned a lot of little things to make it work, but it will work.
See this in FAQ http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php3?t=123833 It is what I did to an 84 bed to make it work. Stllookn hit on some of it in his picture.

Yeah...what Bill said...LOL! Nice job for an old metal butcher! Bill did you extend your stake pockets to match the original '67? I am debating about that and will "Chip Foose" it if it looks like there is an improvement to be made there.

stllookn. I thought about it, but no I left the stakes the original 84 pockets. I had original stake pockets, but I was too lazy to remove both sets , then put the originals on the newer bed.

My son brought it to my attention and I guess I will have a look at it after I get the box extensions in place. I am not sure that it makes much difference, asethically. My '67 box had rust holes big enough for your foot to go through but the stake pockets were perfect so I saved them. It was a pain drilling out all the spot welds. I am also trying to figure out how to make the tail lights look really nice and how to lose the chains. Since I can't decide I think I will just put the '77 tail lights on since the mount holes are already there.
tnblazer...did not mean to hijack your thread.

I trimmed the late model mounts to hold my 70 tail lights. Only a purest and CPNE () can really tell the slight difference in mounting. For the reverse lights, I made a little tab to hang from the taillight bracket to mount the backup light. I have not found them yet in all the junk being moved between the old and new shops or I'd show them, but I have not made it to that group of parts piles yet.

I wish you guys doing this were not so far away.. I have a decent stepside 68-72 sitting under a tree.. All of the crossbraces, bed strips still in the box, two tailgates.. ETC.ETC. I went to a short fleet.....
I also have the 73 up short step bed, with very nice bedsides.. I thought about the same thing 10 or so years back, I set it on the frame and started seeing the changes that would have to be done.. Changed my mind. my hats off to you guys that are or have done it... Lots of metal work. |
