Talking Another new poster, another old truck

Howdy, all!

I just bought my first Chevy truck...a '69 C10! It doesn't run, due to a blown head gasket, but I was able to buy it for $800. That may not sound like a bargain to some, but around here, it's the best I've seen. I'd been looking for one (the right one) for several months, following the theft of my previous ride--let's just say it was of Japanese manufacture, ok?

My goal is to make this thing a daily driver (and my only car), but I have a long way to go before it'll be roadworthy and reliable. The game plan, as of right now, is to tear it apart, clean up the chassis, reassemble the mechanicals with as many new parts as my budget allows, then put it back on the road ASAP. I plan to do the tedious body work later on, as time allows.

Welcome to the board from South Mississippi! That looks like a steal for $800. What part of the country are you in?

Oh yeah and check out the FAQ submission page for lots of good info on our trucks!

jhow66 and krue -- I'm in Upland, CA...about 50 miles east of L.A. (though I thought y'all'd be able to tell it was So Cal from the sunshine! ) I really hope it turns out to be a good deal. The body is about 90% good. The only significant rust areas are the back/bottom of the left rear fender, the right front fender tip (big surprise, eh?), and (ugh) the drip rail.

that is a nice straight truck. If I might add since the body looks in good shape if the frame looks as good as the body and since it is your only vehicle, don't tear it down all the way. Get the engine running (A blown head gasket is not that hard to replace.)replace the motor if necessary and anything that involves safety like the braking and fuel system and start driving especially since you want to "put it back on the road ASAP." Then work on what it needs as you drive it and time/budget allows. It will be a whole lot more fun and you will also have something to drive. Have fun!

$800 was a bargain for a truck that appears to be as solid as yours. Welcome to the board from Virginia!

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone, but I have been hanging around here since September... This board did a lot to confirm my desire to buy this truck in the first place.

for all who think I "stole" it from the PO -- I would categorize this as a "50 foot truck" .... it looks great until you get much closer than 50 feet. I cleverly chose a picture to post that doesn't let you see how bad those drip rails are! Plus, the dash is nearly completely stripped. I did feel a little bad about the sale price, but it wasn't like I beat the guy down on the price. He was only asking $1000, and my offer was equal to the best one he'd had so far.

mrwilmoth -- I did find this truck in the Auto Trader "classic/antique" version (it appeared both in print and online). And for the life of me, I didn't find any better source for ads. For a couple months, it's been part of my morning routine to check the ads online.

Congrats on your find! I agree with chevytruckfan. There is a lot you can do without completely tearing down the truck. It sounds like you could get it on the road pretty quickly. Then weekend projects until you're ready to take the time (and money) for a full frame off. Take it from someone who has a frame in the garage and a disassembled truck along the side of my house. Have fun man!
