I ran Autolites when running bb at the drags. They performed more consistanty than Ac. The 400 can overheat without a thermostat, fluid runs too fast thru the system too cool properly. I learned this the hard way when my 72 Chevelle overheated in staging at Show shine and drag. Bums you right out.

I personally wouldn't put Champions in my lawn mower. I use AC's in everything, even used them in my 6:71 blown Model A Ford (powered by Chevy). The plugs that you're running are probably fine, what condition are your valve seals in? Worn valve seals will play hell on spark plugs.

Im gonna take a swing at this. even though the pics are kind of hard to see by your description I would say it is time for a complete tune-up including a PCV valve, cap, rotor, wires & possible also a coil depending on its integrity. is this a points system? if so give it a set of points & condensor.
I myself recommemd Delco for everything except the plugs. those I say go with a set of 25 or 26 Autolites. I have my reasons for this, & none of it has to do with opinions. all based on experience & seeing the quality of parts these days. avoid the temptation to buy the high dollar whiz-bang high performance parts. unless you are running above 13:1 compression it is a waste of money. trust me, there is a science to this.
then I would give the carb some in-depth tuning using a vacuum guage.
this is all based on the assumption the mechanicles are in good shape (ie. compression, no vacuum leaks etc.)
I forgot to mention why I suggest these steps. it looks like the engine is getting too much fuel & ignition system is not able to burn it.

oh yeah, about the lower hose deal.
is there a good antifreeze-water mix in it? is it possible the "coolant" was froze in the lower hose area & then when the engine warmed up & tried to move the ice it couldnt so the pressure blew the hose off? I have seen it happen.

Let me guess..........the hose clamp was loose? or was there even a clamp on the hose? I've seen that happen before.

Champions get dirty too quick for my tastes. I like AC Delco.
