T350 to 700r4 column concern

I'm having a 700r4 put in my 77 in place of the T350. Has anyone ever modded the column to make it shift to all 4 forward gears? I know I can change the indicator with no trouble. What does it take to get the column to work correctly "besides" converting to a later column?

if you leave it as it is, the very worst is that you won't be able to pull the shifter down to first. I plugged the column out of the 82 Blazer I parted out right into my 77. I know that on some of the more popular floor shifters, there are companies that sell new detents for swapping to an overdrive trans, but not sure about a column.

What trans did your Blazer have? Can you borrow that column?

Ken this should be easy. On the linkage rod (long rod) it has a adjustment on it. Just loosen the adjustment clamp to lengthen the rod's throw down. Have someone shift the column while you are tightening or loosening the rod's clamp. Once you have it set have the person go through all the gears. I've done this on a 83 Blazer and was easy.

Yea but you know how anal I can be about these things. Even though I may never go through all the gears, I have to know that I can if I want to.
My Blazer had a 700r4 but the column needs rebuilt, and it has cruise on the stalk. I just put a rebuilt tilt colmumn in the 77 last year so I hate to change it again.

N2TRUX I have done that swap a couple of times, your shifter will have plenty of swing for a 700R4 and you shouldnt have any probs with the adjusment. Also last time i did that swap GM still sold new shift indicators that you replace your PRND21 with PRND321 i bellieve. Good luck with the swap!

The column isn't tranny specific as far as I know, the linkage "should" work. They did on the ones I changed. The linkage might be different lengths though.

Yeah we had planned to change the linkage to an aftermarket unit if we couldn't get it to adjust....

It may very well adjust. Honestly, the main reason I swapped the columns out is the one out of the 82 had tilt, my 77 didn't. I thought the shifter may be different, but wasn't sure. I just happened to solve 2 problems at once in my case.

Simply for the record--I did not say that this WOULD work but APPEARED that it would.

Thanks for letting us know--my '79 has a 700R4 in it's future so I can rule this shifter out. . .

no detents in the column whatsoever, so you shouldnt have any problems. just install an 82+ shift indicator on the cluster, and call it good.

I did this on mine and I had to slam the shifter at the top so it would fully engage into park. I have since adjusted it so it will not get 1st. I have an '86 tilt column I'm going to swap in hopefully that will take care of the problem. Right now I'm jsut trying to figure out how I can do away with the multifunction switch and change the cover on the top so its like the one in my '78 now.

You may find that once you properly adjust the linkage, you may not be able to manually shift it into 1st. I don't believe the column can be modified to correct this. Although it sounds as though some have been able to get it to work.
