wrecker?
We are thinking of starting up a wrecking yard for just these years of trucks
(67-72) just wondering what you all think we have the room...160 acres and in Alberta there is not very many wrecking yards that only deal with older vehicles.Please submit your thoughts and opinions Wether you think it or if it PS don't ya just love all the smilies |

sounds like a great idea to me. you will have all the parts you need for your own trucks. plus even make a little money too.

How can that be a bad idea? I know I am always needing parts for my junk. Scoop every one you can find...the parts will eventually sell, especially if they are not too rusty, or are in demand like BB stuff. If you have time and space, grabbing ANY older car that has some good stuff left on it might be a good idea. Remember those bush parties years ago where everyone was jumping on the roof of a F@rd Maverick or 66 Grand Prix? Ever see what parts for those cars are going for nowadays, especially up here? Its unreal. I think it would be a fun side hobby, but what do I know, I like F@rds

I think it's a great idea,I think a lot of us have our own little stash of trucks.If you can make some money off it I say go for it.I know at least I have a little trading material if nothing else.

Thanks guys!!I have tried to get the wife to go for this idea but she was unsure if it would work.I would like to save a few from the crusher as i have seen lots that were in great shape and lots of parts become compact cars

It sounds great to me, one thing you might want to look into are the bylaws in your area for fluids leaking into the ground (antifreeze, gas, oil, ect.) or waste management if its applicable. Just a thought

Best yards I have seen have had most of the trucks indoors. They used those cheepo alum housing things you see ads for on TV. It kept all the parts from rusting more but they did not need to dismandle....

Are you talking about this as your only means of income, or just a side thing? I'd think you'd need a much broader range of vehicles to sustain a living. I tend to think if there was money in dealing strictly in older vehicles, you'd see a lot more yards that do just that. Now, on the other side, I say Hell yeah, go for it so I'd have someone else to contact when I can't find that particular part I need!

There is a local guy that deals only in chevy trucks from 60 -72,and only handles that year of truck salvage.He builds one or buys one to refresh and sell,and makes a nice comfortable living.I'm sure there are some travels involved,delivering,and pickup ect.but t seems to be very lucrative for him.

Combined with internet sales of parts with shipping and it could be a pretty good deal. I agree about covering the trucks, or at least parts that you have salvaged. As you know, no rust gets a premium.

I'd say do it as a side venture...definitely check into local bylaws etc. If you do it I'll definitely have to make a Cross Canada Trip to come see you guys and buy some parts/trucks!

I know that I'd definitely buy some goodies from you
Hope the prices don't go up too much, tho. A soft sided quonset might be a good investment to keep snow and weather off of the better units.

Ok now that I have interst in this idea.I am going to find out the info i need to know for Ground contamination and permits.This will only be a side line job.I have found 4 more trucks that i need to look at too.I will keep you all posted with what we are going to do.My wife is warming up to this idea!!

If you do this and want some help I am in Saskatoon and do lots of touring on my Goldwing in the summer and could probably find lots of trucks for you to come get. I know my stuff and am a good negotiator buying and selling vehicles as I was in the car business for 25 years. I see you drive Dodge Trucks and your local Chrysler dealer Jim F used to work for me as a salesman in the 80's.

You may find you need a truck with a lift to get trucks not on wheels, or otherwise draggable, up on a trailer.

Heck, I say go for it. Another GOOD parts source is always a great thing.
I know Alberta is getting sticky on environmental regulations though. This could be a real downside because control of fluids, CFCs etc. could get expensive fast. Down here there would be zoning issues and they would change the property tax rate as well. Suggest you get everything in a row to figure out what it's going to cost first. On the other side if you only went for a few vehicles at a time and kept it small I'd bet the govt. wouldn't bother you. |
