series 2 or 3 rear end?
I want to order a posi traction unit of the 70 c 10 half ton 2wd.
In looking at the information-- they always want to know if it is a series 2 or series 3 carrier. What doe this mean. I know I have a 12 bolt rear end with a 3.73 gear in the rear and I know it is the original rear end for the truck. Wat does the carrier refer to half ton or three quarter ton? Any thoughts on this appreciated. What brand of posi unit does the board members recommend? I have looked at Eaton and detroit locker are there others? What vendor do you recommend for the best price? Thanks for all the replies.

the factory 12 bolt(1/2 ton ), runs a 4 series carrier for 3.73 & numerically higher gears (4.10, 4.56, ect). 3.07 & 3.42 are on a 3 series carrier. 69L

IMHO I would purchase an Eaton Posi unit. I personally don't like the Auburn units, as they are not rebuildable. Although I recently saw that Auburn is touting a rebuildable unit now, but I thinkg you have to send it back to Auburn Gear. I wouldn't get a locker for your 2wd C10.

As the series number increases, the flange on the carrier where the ring gear bolts to gets thicker (thus the ring gear is pushed closer to the pinion). The reason for increased flange dimension is to make up for the decrease in pinion gear diameter that occurs as the overall numeric ratio increases. For example, a 3.07 pinion gear has a much larger diamter than a 4.10:1 pinion gear. If ordering after market gears, you can get a special 3.73 or 4.10 (normally series 4 carrier) thick gearset to work with a 3 series carrier.
