Tilt column

I have a salvage yard that has a good tilt column and wheel out of a 76 that I wish to buy. I am curious what price is fair so when I ask them I am not getting gouged. It is in excelent shape, from a floor shift truck.
Thanks,
Dave

Beware that a 76 truck column doesn't swap into a 67-72 without mods. A 76 van column is a slam dunk swap though.

So what about a price for one of those. WhAT mods are necessary for using the 76 column.
Thanks,
Dave

A 76 column will have the ignition in the column and a 67-72 is in the dash. (wiring and shaft differences) The column your looking at is worth about $75 if good and tight.

Are there any tilt columns out there which are a 'perfect' fit for 67-72 and don't have ignition on the column?

72 - 81 vans are very close. Relocate the neutral safety switch, and shorten the intermidiate shaft and it'll go in and look JUST like a stock unit.
Some motor homes do have one that is the right length...but I am unsure of the switch placement on them.

I used a motorhome column in my green 70. The length was perfect, no shortening of the intermediate shaft was needed, but I did have to relocate the neutral switch.

Factory truck tilt columns. They show up on the board for sale real often. Main thing is, about 2 to 3 times the price of a van tilt column. Personally, I can move the neutral safety switch and whack the intermediate shaft for the money saved.

Are you looking for a floor shift model? If so I think an original truck tilt is all you will find, and those go for $300 - $400 usually.

I'm looking for shift on the column. If it came down to it and I put the shifter on the floor, I would still go for the cheaper column shifter and fill the hole for the shifter on the clumn or something to save some bucks.

The two first projects going into my truck are tilt and power steering. I was just curious.

I don't know much about steering and suspension components. I don't know what an intermediate shaft is or how to shorten it. I understand the purpose and concept of a neutral switch, but I don't know where it's located or how to relocate it.

I gotta seriously find some decent salvage yards here in Atlanta or nearby.

The van tilt is your best route. Shortening the sterring shaft is very easy, and so is moving th nuetral safety switch. Check out the FAQ section, I think both mods are covered.

I found the FAQ thread about how to relocate the neutral safety switch, but nothing about shortening the column :\ Strange.

Maybe I'll need to make one. I'll google for it later

The steering shaft is pretty easy. There are 2 plastic/nylon rivets that hold it in place. You need to drill those out. Then the shaft can collapse. Sometimes it takes some light hitting with a hammer, and sometimes it takes a bunch of PB Blaster and a huge hammer.
