10 bolt?
Ok, all you smart guys, can you answer me a question. I have a 66 Chevy C-30. I opened the cover of the differential to look at the No-Spin that is installed. Colorado K5 web site says that the 10 bolt is for newer vehicles than my 66. I also find it hard to believe that the same axle goes under S-10's that goes under 66 C-30. I guess maybe GM had many different Corporate 10 bolts. This truck is headed to the junkyard in the sky soon. It's a pity, but it needs a new cab and my homeowners association is all over my a@@ about it making the property values lower in the area. I'll never buy another house where there is a property owners association. It's my property and I should be able to do what I want on it. So could anyone shed some light on what axle I have?

All of the 60-66 trucks, and even up yo '72 have either a 10 bolt or 12 bolt rearend. Lately i've noticed on the brand new, and few year old GM trucks, espically on teh 4x4's with the same 10 bolt as on my '62. The rearend on mine is a Eaton 10 bolt, it has a inspection cover on the back, and the pumpkin comes out the front as a whole unit. Also the inspection cover is in a perfect circle. There IS a drain plug on the very bottom of the housing. I hope this helps, also if you do need a pic, i'll snap a pic of my rearend, and post it. not my rearend, but the trucks.

Thanks for the information. It is definitely a 10 bolt. I pulled the back cover off and took a look inside. I wonder if a No-Spin is worth my effort to pull before they tow it away? The truck doesn't need axles to be towed or roll backed so it would be possible to pull it. It might be better to just yank the whole pumkin out the front but I don't think anyone wants those gear unless they have stock in an oil company.

Someone has been feeding you boys some bad info.
If you have a removable center section in one of those years trucks it is most likely one of the eaton axles (could be a swaped in ford 9"). The 10bolt wasn't put in trucks untill 1978 when it was used in the front if 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks. Some ware around 81 or so they started using them in the rear of the 1/2 ton trucks. The corperate axles (10, 12, 14bolt...) are made by a company called AAM. The 10 bolt is a wimpy axle and never came in a c30, never came with a detroit locker (no spin)...some came with a gove-lock diff witch was weeker than the stock open diff. I forget exactly when ?mid 60's? but the eaton simi floaters were phased out and they started using 12bolts in the rear of 1/2 tons. If its an eaton 1 ton and has a detroit no spin locker + the 5.13 gears in it, it will be fairly desirable for someone who wheels. Try to sell over on CK5, with that gearing and the detroit its worth a couple of hundred. They are strong axles with great gound clearance; but its getting hard to find parts for those axles. I would love to have it but I'm all the way out in MT. |

Providing your axle is original, it is an Eaton H-072. The No-Spins (Detroit Locker) are not uncommon in these axles or the H-052s (same basic axle, smaller brakes). The Eatons are sometimes referred to as Corporate 10 bolts and that's where the confusion comes in. It has nothing in common with the later corporate 10 bolt which GM started using in trucks in the late 70s/early 80s. Available ratios were: 4.10, 4.57, and 5.14.

I ripped the third member out and it turned out to be a 11,000 lb axle with the thrust adjust bolt. It did not have a No-Spin even through a sticker in the cab said that it was equipped with a No-Spin. That's one heavy piece of metal.
