Bought a truck, need some info
I just bought a 68 3/4 ton chevy 4x4 off ebay, and wanted to know some more about it, and things to look for. I talked to the seller on the phone, and i'll try to repeat what he told me about the truck.
68 chevy longbed, CST model, 3/4 ton 4x4. 4.56 gears, 4 speed manual, gear to gear transfer case. 1970 chevy LS6 454 big block, bored 30 over, fully blueprinted and balanced, new everthing inside the motor (only 30 miles on the motor) 500 lift cam, dual row timing chain, 11:1 pistons, edelbrock intake, edelbrock 750 carb. He said it has a closed knuckle front axle, Birfield joint (sp?), what is this and is it good? Good glass, and decent interior, factory buckets, forgot to ask about a/c or tach. Needs new brakes, and drums turned, as well as the typical patch panels for the cab. A few questions. He said the engine has the braketry for power steering, how hard would it be to put power steering on? My dad has a 79 k10 for a donor truck. I know the patch panels are cheap and a piece of cake, but he said the inside of the bed is really rust expecially around where the fender wells connect. Are there patch panels for this, or would i be better off looking for different bed, no matter how i do it the bed is getting a spray on bedliner. On another note, is there any way to easily tell if the engine in the truck is truly a LS6 motor? I was told by a friend that the motor could be worth big bucks. Thanks for any help, and i'll get pictures asap. JT Jones |

I don't know how to tell you how to find out, but if you truly do have an LS6 454 in there, I'd sell it to a Chevelle person and put the BIG money you'd get for it into an even better engine.

Bought a truck, need some info and help.
I posted this in the open forum, but figured i would post it here as well.
1970 chevy LS6 454 big block, bored 30 over, rectangle port heads, fully blueprinted and balanced, new everthing inside the motor (only 30 miles on the motor) 500 lift cam, dual row timing chain, 11:1 pistons, edelbrock intake, edelbrock 750 carb. Brand new radiator, and american racing rims. Are there patch panels for this, or would i be better off looking for different bed, no matter how i do it the bed is getting a spray on bedliner. I was looking around on ebay and came across a disc brake set up for the rear (14 bolt is factory i think) and was wondering if it was the way to go. What is the best way to do the discs on the front and convert everthing to power? Link to auction On another note, is there any way to easily tell if the engine in the truck is truly a LS6 motor? I was told by a friend that the motor could be worth big bucks. Thanks for any help, and i'll get pictures asap Link to auction http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWN%3AIT

Jonesy,
Sorry I can't help with the truck related questions. Just bought one myself, and found this great site. But as far as the LS6 goes, if it's as the auction stated, a 70 ls6, it should have one of these 3 suffix codes on the front engine pad, just in front of the passenger side head. CRR, CRS, or CRV. You can find out more about its worth by posting the question on chevelles.com or even doing a search there. hope this helps, Terry |

Here are a few pics i snapped today of my new baby. After getting it home and really looking at it, i'm going to be better off just getting a different cab and bed (floor is almost gone and all bed supports are rotten).
Truck Factory buckets, needs recovered or replaced. Factory original Delco AM radio, no A/C Even came with the original tires and wheels Heavy duty rear axle (factory?) anyone know what type it is? I count 10 bolts on the cover. Fully balanced and blueprinted 454 (guy says it is a LS6), rectangle closed port heads, 10:1 pistons, 500 lift cam, edelbrock 750 carb and intake. Thanks for looking, and be prepared for tons of questions as I start digging into my new project. JT Jones

When you forst said 11:1 pistons, I thought OMG, later, 10:1 pistons........what grade of gas are you planning on? With iron heads, watch out for detonation. Hope it's not a daily driver.

I believe this truck should have the same axles as my '64. Look at the front axle and see if the axle u-joints are exposed or if it has the ball and trunion style steering. I suspect it has the old ball and trunion. Good stuff. Damn near indestructable. Only problem is you can't do power steering or power brakes with this front axle. Look at your steering box-does the steering shaft come out the side or the bottom of the box? If it comes out the side then you would have difficulty mounting a power steering box. I looked into all this stuff when I got my '64. I was going to put the axles from my '72 under the truck when I figured out that it just wasn't worth doing. The drum brakes work fine-I really don't go much more than 60 with 4:56 gears. The steering got a lot better when I removed the 14" Grant steering wheel and replaced it with a stock 16" wheel. Since the front axle has tapered roller bearings in an oil bath instead of ball joints that don't have grease nipples and the axle u-joints are in the same oil bath I don't think I'll be replacing too many parts there either.

The seller said 10:1 pistons, but with the heads he put on he said it bumped it up to 11:1. He said he had the heads built to run on 93, so we'll see what happens. Right now it is a project truck then it will probably become a weekend runner when i get it finished

Ok need some help with decoding the vins. The door jam vin is KE248F141021 and the motor has the code C8F322908 (taken from in front of passenger side head). What did this 454 originally come in, or was it a crate motor?

I am not that great at decoding, but could it be CEF instead of C8F?

Looks like a HO rear end. There are 2 types... I don't know much about this, some of the others on this board do.
You should have closed-knuckle front end. Mines a 1/2T instead of the 3/4T you have, but so far its been trouble free. A rebuild solved my leaking axle ends... Your X-fer case is probably the T-221 like mine. It is noisier and older than a NP205, but still cast iron case, with gears inside. The T-221 is straight cut gears, the NP205 is angle cut... Tranny is probably (?) a M-465. Reverse is to the right and down? otherwise its a M-420 and reverse is left and down... Welcome to the board, where are you from?

If that is a a true date coded 70 LS6 with matching heads. You have a jem of a motor. You could probably pull that motor and sell it and not only get another built 454, but get your money back for the truck. The 70 LS6 was the highest rated Comp. and HP motor available from GM. in stock form. There was also the higher rated All alluminum 427. Those range around 20-40 thousand dollars now (date coded of course).
Nice truck for sure. Enjoy, and see ya around.

I will defintely need to upgrade my front axle then if i can't put discs on the front. I will need them when i'm hualing the bobcat or 20'+ box trailer around. And i'll need power steering for the 4" lift and 35's that are going on it.
Yeah reverse is down and to the right. Any idea as to the gear ratios of each gear? and the ratios of the transfer case? The engine code front in front of the passenger side head is C8F322908 and the Vin is Ke248F141021. I can't find any BB code list with the C8F suffix. Crate motor? Thanks for the help thus far. JT Here are few pics of the front axle, it is the closed knuckle type.

Thank Mudder67, i posted in the main forum then saw this one and decided it was the better place to post.
1969K10, that would be great. I drove it down to my buddies shop today and in 4th gear, At about 3000-3200 rpm it was only doing about 45 so either big tires or a regear are in order. I could easily take off in third gear with out slipping the clutch or anything.
