super swamper thornbirds
Im going to buy some 35" tires tuesday and called the local offroad shop, and they had them for 150$ each. I would like to now how good these tires are, and how they wear? I love the look of them and they are in my price range but I think I read bad things about them before and I am wanting to make sure I get a good deal.
PS This is my first post, I have been a visiting this site for a while now and love it. |

ive heard these tires are often out of round quite a bit, so if the vehicle is more street driven then it could cause a poor ride. ive never had any personally so i can't confirm this

I've heard they are a sheep in wolf's clothing; they look nasty and aggressive but often disappoint when offroading. Some people have said they'd rather stick with BFG AT's. Some people might like them, I just thought you'd like a heads-up.

Thanks for the fast reply, what tires do you all prefer then? Im going to buy soon and would rather get quality than good looks. It has to be around 170 a tire or under and Im looking for a mudder. I appreciate any help

I've never driven them but I've also never heard anything good about Thornbirds. Ride Quality, Wear, etc.. Is this your daily driver you're putting these tires on? Are you looking for a cool look or is this a bogger and not a lot of street time.
I've got MT Baja Claw Radials on my 01 Z71 and they've been pretty friendly. Nothing like stockers but I like the look and ride Might also look into BFG Mud Terrains and ALl Terrains

Its my daily driver but I dont put many miles on it. I will mainly be offroading on my grandmas land while shooting my AK on the weekends, but it while be used mainly for street. The look is second to quality.

These tires come to mind for an off roader/mudder.
1. Goodyear MTRs 2. Super Swamper TSL 3. Super Swamper Iroks 4. Ground Hawgs 5. Baja Claws 6. BFGs I'm running the TSLs but its mainly trail, but they ride fairly good on the hwy. I'd stay away from the Thornchickens.

Bringit; do you need to use a highway a lot travelling fast? Do you need it for driving on snow or ice? If the answers to either are yes you probably don't want a hardcore mud tire (ie. Boggers, maybe some types of Super Swampers etc.) There are "milder" mud tires available like BFG's MT, Goodyear MTR etc.

BFG M/Ts or Goodyear MT/Rs would be the way to go. my buddy was given a set of 31 x 12.50(?) Thornturds, so he put them on his Tracker. ran them for 2 days, then switched back to passenger car tires. he got better performance out of the car tires.

There are other good, affordable mud tires too like Pro Comp's Mud Terrain, Yokohama and High-Tec Retreads Mud and Mud OTR. If you live in the U.S. the retreads are DIRT cheap. (in Canada the overall cost is more, since it's a mail-order tire we get screwed at the border) On the testimonial page I've heard people say that their Mud OTR tires have taken them places their BFG MT's wouldn't. The company is a small one out of Edgemont, SD. The have a limited range of sizes though from 235-75R-15 up to 33x12.5"-15 for the 15" rims and 225-75R-16 up to 265-75R-16.
Sorry, High-Tec Retreads don't make 35's... yet, I'm hoping! Last edited by uncle_handsome; 04-04-2005 at 09:03 PM. |

I don't know if they still make them, but a few friends love the Gumbo Monster Mudders. Around here they work better than Swamper TSL's...

if you do go with the Hi-Tec retreads, be aware that they are NOT a quiet tire.

The BFGoodrich M/T's are one hell of a good tire. Here is a link to another thread about them. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php3?t=147239
I have also heard good stuff about the Gumbo Monster Mudders and the Goodyear M/T's, never personally had any experience though. -Later

friend had them and they wear really really quick on the pavement I'd never buy them.... I run 40X17X15 Ground hawgs and I could never be happier the things 3 years later still have deep deep tread and work awesome in the mud.... I'd buy ground hawgs again.... ya they are noisy on the freeway but I kinda like it that way lol Just my opinion.....

the fate of my 86 is really up in the air right now, as money is starting to get a little tight, and i'm losing interest in a pile of parts VERY fast. i sold my Dana 60/14FF and my 40s and locks almost 2 weeks ago. so she's either getting majorly downsized, or nixed altogether. if i nix it, my 91 K1500 is going to get some tinkering done to it to the tune of 6" of SFA lift, 35s, 3/4 ton axles, and a nice torquey little TBI 383. just a little at a time though. i did post pics of all 3 of my rigs in the pic forum here a few days ago. |

I ran TSL's for several years. I think you will like them. They tend to get flat spots if you dron't drive it everyday but they go away pretty fast once on the pavement. Rotate them. The fronts tend to wear on any 4x4.
