Need HELP!!! NO SPARK
I'm having trouble starting my new engine. I have everything connected right ,but when I turn the key it just turns over and does not fire up. So I checked to see if I had spark ,but their is no spark. I disconnected the coil wire and their is no spark coming out of the coil, But their is power to the coil. Can someone please tell me how I can test the coil. Or can some one help me trouble shoot it. Thanks

Your power comes into the coil, from the resistor wire, at the + side. The wire from the distributor goes to the - side of the coil. Are you positive that's the way it's hooked up? You might try, that, and if nothing else, find a friend with an extra coil laying around, and swap them...see what happens....

THE SPARK
HOOK YOUR WIRES LIKE '68 SAY'S. THE YELLOW WIRE IS YOUR RESISTOR WIRE, POS SIDE OF YOUR COIL , POINTS WIRE TO THE - SIDE. CHECK GROUND ON MOTOR . VOLT METER, GOTTA HAVE ONE IN THIS BUSINESS. + LEAD TO POS SIDE OF COIL, GROUND - LEAD TO BLOCK. TURN OVER MOTOR, YOU SHOULD GET AT LEAST12 VDC . WHEN IT STARTS , IT SHOULD DROP BACK TO UNDER 9 VDC. IF YOU HAVE THIS VOLTAGE (12 VDC) AND IT ISNT FIRING CHECK COIL LIKE IT WAS POSTED BEFORE. ALSO, SMALL ENGINE SHOPS SELL A IN LINE FLASHER LIGHT, IT LIGHTS WHEN IGNITION SPARKES. COMES IN HANDY WITH THESE KIND OF PROBLEMS. GOOD LUCK

Hey D, the yellow is not the resistor, the white one is. The yellow, which should also be hooked to the positive goes down to the starter and is only hot when you are cranking it. That is why it goes up to 12 volts when cranking over.

I swapped it with a good coil and it still just turns over ,but does not fire up. I put in a new MSD ready to run Distributor and MDS coil. Would the battery have something to do with the problem? I took the one out of my 68 truck , but my 68 has a straight 6cyl and the motor I'm trying to start is a 350.

If it is cranking, then the battery is good enough.
Where are you checking for spark, at a plug wire, or at the coil wire? |

I checked it a the coil and at the #1 spark plug.

If the timing is off by a bit would that cause it not to have a spark.

How much is a "bit"? Yes, that could cause it to not have spark, I've seen it happen.

Is it possible you have the distributer off 180 degrees? We had that problem on my brothers 350 but i am not sure if a 6 is the same

I put the piston to dead center and dropped in the new dist, but when I put it in the rotor was pointer forward straight down the block I lined up the #1 plug wire on the cap to the rotor. A buddy I just talked to told me the rotor had to point twords the #1 piston. Can some one please clarify that.

if it is possible take out number one plug and have someone bump start while you have your finger on the number one hole to make sure you feel it is on the compression stroke.

It does not matter which way it is pointing.
Get it back to #1 top dead center. Confirm it is on the compression stroke by checking for air coming out of the spark plug hole like said. (plug removed) Then, after you feel air coming out, runt it untill the timing pointer is on 4 degrees BTDC. Pull of your dist. cap, and where ever that rotor is pointing, place the #1 wire over it. (turn distibuter a little laft or right to get the wire right over the rotor). Then follow the firing order and wire it all up. You may still have to mess with it when you get it to fire, but this will get you in the ball park if not dead on. Use a timing light to get it set after all is said and done. |

If your timing is off, you will get exactly the same spark at the plugs anyway, just not at the right time. If you have no spark, the most likely cause is that the points are not opening. you can make a coil spark simply by hooking juic to the + side, and grounding the - side, and you will generate spark when you un-ground the wire. (a lot of dwell here, though!) That is the easiest way to check the coil. If the coil is good, make sure the points are opening, then be sure you have a path to ground for the points.
