Question Help: 71 GMC K1500 Front Spindles

I am looking for replacment front spindles for my 1971 GMC K1500. My problem is, I am not sure if somone has replaced the front-end (with a different from factory one, prior to me owning it). I have two questions:

1) How would I identfy which spindles I need, given that I don't know if I have a factory front?

2) I need a place to purchase the spindles, used is ok, as long as there are in good/working condition

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

- Jim

From western n.c. where are you located? It will help you find parts close to you. I have a pair of front spindles off a 87 2wd burb for $100 shipped ,these will work, you just have to use 73-87 ball joints..

What is the inner bearing part number? a 603049 or a 104949 --probably should have posted this in the 4x4 section, some of the guys want you to convert this to 2wd

Spindles

You can interchange spindles from D44 1/2 ton & Corp. 10 bolt 1/2 ton front ends, but you have to swap everything from the spindle out to the hub
due to the bearings bearing different. For instance: If you have a D44 front end under your truck you can take the spindle, bearings, hub and all the guts from a Corp. 10 bolt and put them on your D44 front end.

Here is a picture of both the small and large bearing spindles. The spindle on the left is an original 1971 Dana 44 version. The one on the right is the large 1977 Dana 44 spindle. The 10 bolt axles used the same large bearing spindle.

Beast388, Thanks for the Pics! That helps me out a lot, I think my truck now has the 1977 Dana44 Spindles on it. I was able to find here, the origonal 1971 spindles, and was confused because they were smaller (although, they could be in better condition).

All of the parts from the spindle out need to be replaced anyways (i snapped a U-Joint while driving..).

Does anyone have the 1977 Dana 44s, that I could purchase (in good, working condition)?

4x4

I knew you wanted 4x4 by the "K" designation. I'll have to pull mine apart to see if they're the larger ones..................Z

I probably have it all....newer than 72 spindles, u-joints. tie rod ends, ball joints of some kind, drag link, steering arm ends. I got a pile of newer 4x4 stuff some how years back. It's a GM and all brand new. Most of the part numbers on the stickers are worn off and such.....but I think I can tell what it is still. Let me know if you want me to go grab em and and take a pic. I dont have a parts book newer than 75 so I may have to post to ask what some of this is.
I got other newer stuff too...door hinges, wiper motors, washer pumps, floor switches, wiper switches, oil gauge...etc. All NOS GM.
I've never had a 4x4 newer than 72 so I never used it, never even bothered to see if it interchanged. I got more than I'll probably ever need or use.

I have a pair of D44 spindles from a '71, but I think they are small bearing. I'll look tonight.
