gas mileage on a 283??
Hi guys,
am looking at a 57 in the UK as a daily driver. What kind of gas mileage do you get out of a stock 283? Thanks Lee

I had a 383 in a SS impala ragtop and got about 14 MPG from it.
Yours may vary due to the truck wind resistance and it also depends on trans type and rear gearing. Could be anywhere from 8-18 MPG. Sorry if this is not much help. Should be similar to your '72 if you have the 307 in the truck and trans and gears are similar. Last edited by DennyB; 04-21-2005 at 02:14 PM. |

Actually I wouldn't mind know as well. I've got a similiar setup:
'58 longbed 1/2 ton 283 cid - stock except for a mild cam upgrade currently a 350 auto trans, though I'm hoping to swap in a 200R4 with overdrive rear gears are stock 3.91 Not sure what this'll get, it is still bare frame. So it'll be awhile before i can find out. Oh i'm also going to put a 4 barrel carb on it rather than the stock carb/intake. |

I had a stock 283 in my 59 Chevy Pickup while I was in high school. I was getting about 15-18 mpg on 92 octane. Now it has a 283 out of a 64 Impala, mild cam and Edelbrock intake and carb. I also have HEI too.

I shared rides to work with a guy whose '64 Chev.longbed w/283 & powerglide ALWAYS got 18 or better. My own '62 w/283 & 4 speed only got 8-11 mpg. Of course,it's a 1 ton,with a 5.08 rear.

My 59 shortbed with bored .030" stock 283, 2bbl rochester, 3 on the tree, and 3.90-1 rear averaged 11.8 mpg summer 2004 on GA- CA round trip. I have had this truck 32 years and that is about what it has always gotten.
