Should I put chrome on or not? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My truck is no where finished and it will be a yr or two before thats done. I need to put some new mirrors on and a bumper. If I put 2 new chrome mirrors and a chrome bumper would they start rusting away? The truck is always in a garage. Or should I just leave them off until I get the truck finished?

You can put them on now, if it's garaged then in should be fine. The new aftermarket bumpers (I believe) have a lifetime warranty on the chrome. Be sure not to over-tighten the bumper bolts or you take a chance at loosening the chrome around the bolt holes.

VERY sound advice Randy! My little brother BUBBA used to over torque all his bolts to the point of snapping until I bought him a torque wrench. He is a big boy! LOL

Would it help if I put a small thin rubber washer inbetween the bolt and the bumper? Truck69

Not needed as long as you do not over tighten. Afterwards give them a protective wax job or any chrome polish protection while in storage>

On the backsides spray a light coating of WD-40 or other oil for more protection.
