To add to my long list of things I need to fix, I brought in a wheel that I thought just had a slow leak in the tire. They just called me up and told me that the rim was actually cracked and it was leaking out of there. Is it a bad idea to repair a rim in this situation? Should I just buy a new one?

Is that on your aluminum wheels? If so, it might be weldable, but will take a lot of work to polish it out.

Yes, it is unfortunately. They quoted me $175 to fix it.

Need to know the size, 16 or 15 X Width. I know of a tire shop close to me that has a few of those sitting outside, unknown if the are 5 or six luggers. Also posting your location in the top right would be a big help too.

Plavelle. Hard to tell but those look like either ET slot wheels or Ansen Sprint wheels. There may be a name cast in the backside of the wheel along with the size. I had a set of ET IV alum slots on my first truck. A crack appeared in one of the rims after mounting them which leaked air. I put a tube in it and ran it for 8 or 9 years like that. No probs. If you really like the ones you have and want to stay with them then the 175 repair might not be bad as it's less than buying a whole new set. American Racing wheels is selling the Ansen Sprint slotted mags now. It is viewable at their website www.americanracing.com . Last page I think. I think there is another one or two selling that style slot mags but can't remember a name right now.

I would be pretty nervous driving on a cracked wheel (imho). Boog did ok as he mentioned... but... Those look like Ansen Sprint ll wheels from the pic, I believe they were on the market in the early 70's (great look wheels). Ok, I know it has taken me a really long time, but I finally got the front wheel off to get all the numbers. I am converting the front to 5-lug disc brakes, so I need to find a pair to match the back until I can afford to buy what I really want for wheels.

Height = 15 in.
Total Width = 9.5 in.
Backspacing = 3 3/8 in.
Offset = -1.375 in.
Bolt circle = 5.5 in.

Seems like a pretty wide wheel for the front that I need to find to match. I am converting to the '71 setup for the disc brakes so I'm not sure if that changes anything.

Any help would certainly be appreciated.

I wouldn't go with the 71 brakes... IIRC, that was a one year set up and the parts are more expensive.

Yeah I bouight the setup from EarlyClassic.com to convert from 6-lug drum brakes to 5-lug power disc brakes. Haven't installed it yet though, as I need to purchase the wheels first.

I am planning on going 5-lug all around eventually, which is why I bought the front in 5-lug. I need a new rim on one side anyway, so I just decided to buy two new 5-lugs, and hopefully I can find a decent match to the slotted rims in the back.

I'm confused too longhorn.... my suspension came off of a '71 GMC coil spring truck. I didn't have any problems buying parts (I bought EVERYTHING brand new including the calipers and rotors) from either autozone or advanced.... (well, I did have to get the hoses from LMC) and the prices seemed reasonable to me. I don't think I spend more than $300 on the entire suspension and brake rebuild

Plavelle: I have the same problem you do. I have the exact same set of rims you do (the six lug, but mine aren't as shiney!) and I too have converted to a '71 5 lug disk front and still need to locate a good 5 lug rear. You may want to PM longhorn man and ask what the dilly is with 71's being "more expensive"

you can buy all the parts for 71 disc brake trucks just as easily as you can 72, but 72 will NOT bolt onto a 71 without changing stuff. the calipers fit in but then the hoses have to be changed to. so they are interchangable, but with extra parts added in... 72 calipers are about $12 each and 71 about $22 each. the 71 hoses are also more expensive... ive ran into this on both of my 71s when i tried to buy the cheaper 72 calipers
