R&R mains with motor still installed

I have a knock I beleive comming from my front main. Do this by dropping the pan only. In my shop manual it says you can use a cotter pin in the oil hole, turn the motor & role the bearing out. Has anyone did it this way before?

I have replaced the mains as a temporary fix. I just left the center cap loosely bolted and removed the others, removed the bearings and rolled the new ones in place and then loosely installed the other caps to allow center bearing replacement. I would be carefull if trying to use a cotterpin as not to damage the crank.

Did you just drop the pan? Leaving the crank/trans connected & timming cover still bolted on.
