My truck still has the gas tank in the cab. My truck is stock, so relocation is no option. Has anyone had a mild lingering gas smell? (not of the human nature). My tank does not leak. I have a new filler neck gasket and cap. Could it be the old hoses are emitting the odor? The smell is slight, but wont go away. Ayone with ideas?

Check the O ring around the sender on top of the tank.

Does it smell more when you fill it up, or all the time?

If its when you fill up you might want to swap out the filler hose.

it's a good idea to replace ALL the original pieces of rubber hoses even the one under the cab going to the frame rail . and as mentioned the O'ring gasket for the sending unit also while changing that is a good time to clean/replace the sock strainer in the tank

gas smells good though... (mine usually does, a little more than usual at fill ups)

I would check what everyone else has suggested so far first. I had the same problem after checking everything the smell was still there, I bought a vented gas cap to fix it but it did not.

Some one posted pictures on how to cut the spring in the vented gas cap so it would vent better I did it and it worked great no more gas smell.

does it have the EEC feature where there is a hose coming from near the filler then goes up inside "B" pillar & back down. maybe this is venting.
just an idea.

Check the rubber fuel lines attaching to the sending unit in the cab. If they are original I bet they are cracked. Had this happen in two trucks, lines look ok untill you take a real good look.

if all this fails to net you a fuel less cab, look on the bottom of the filler neck where it joins the tank. (no hoses on these rigs) They often crack right there. Easy to solde.

One day this summer, you should probably gut the int of the truck, pull the cab, and scrub everything real good. There is probably small amounts of fuel that has soaked into the carpet and into the sheet metal/rust.

I'll start checking hoses cracks ect. How does the sending unit come out? I don't see any screws. No carpet to hold the smell. Cab was just painted. No vent in pillar either.

Sending unit has a lock collar. There are tangs on it. Use a screwdriver and hammer to lightly tap counter clockwise.

I had the same problem, it was the hoses, I took the seat out to get a good look. That was the only way I could really get a good look at them. Once I replaced them the smell was gone.
