Tranny Question
Hi folks,
You may remember that I was having trouble with my transmission. OK, probably not. Anyway, it has stopped moving altogether in reverse , and the governor is bad, and it leaks... Long story short, I want to replace it. But it seems I need to know the tailshaft length in order to get the right replacement. I crawled under the truck to try to measure it, but I'm having a hard time deciding on a line between "tranny" and "tailshaft" . It's a TH350 in a '70 C20 with 350 V8 -- does anybody know how what the length of the tailshaft would be for this tranny? If not, can you give me any tips on measuring it? Thanks for helping out a newbie... -John |

Welcome to the board from West Michigan!
The tail shaft is the cast aluminum housing that bolts to the back of the TH 350 with (4) bolts. On the "short tail shaft housing" the casting is about 6" long. I don't have a long tail shaft housing but I believe that it is about 10" long. If you can find the four bolts you will be able to tell where the split is. Jim |
