Temperature sender on new style motor ???

For all you guys that have installed later model engines SBC-350, the temperature sending ports on the newer heads are smaller. What sending units work with new style heads and the original type gauge. THANKS!!!

I have seen this question asked several times, and have yet to see an answer. For my truck I found a water neck (thermostat housing) from an early '80s car that had the right size threaded hole in the top of it for the temperature sender. It's not the ideal location for the sender, but it works.

i asked this question a month or two ago, like said, not much in the way of answers. best bet is to drill out manifold and mount temp sender there.

I used an aftermarket GM intake and it had the correct size hole by the thermostat housing. I just re-located wiring to new location.

I have decided to just use an open fitting near the thermostat...will use the drivers side manifold for the temp-light. If I come up with anything else, I will post it...

If you can find out the voltage output range for each of these senders you could possibly add an inline resistor to get the gauge to read properly. Do the Haynes manuals cover this information?

If I remember correctly, the newer smaller senders have higher resistance than the older larger senders, so adding a resistor inline with a newer sender will make the situation worse. It might be possible to connect a resistor between the terminal of the sender and ground to lower the resistance, but we would need to know the specs of the new and old sensors in order to size the resistor correctly.

A guy I know put a set of vortec's on. He drilled and tapped the driver side head (before head was on). I told him I'd be afraid to do that. He said it went real smooth.But he did say he was nervous drilling and tapping a brand new head!

I bought a new t-stat housing and sender from LMC...........the sender would not fit any of the holes in the Edlebrock RPM manifold or the vortec heads...........I actually had to try a couple housings, one would not match up w/ the rad hose correctly.

I plugged the hole on my Vortec heads and mounted the temp sensor at the thermostat housing... works like a charm, inexpensive, and has 0 chance of screwing up your heads.
