I got the code stamped in the pad on the front of the block. F1231UE does anyone know how to decode the number to determine advertised horsepower and torque?? The casting # on the back of the block is 3782870 which mortec shows to be a 62-67 327.
I'd like to know what year the thing is for sure. The guy that sold it thought it was a 63. ------------------ Ol' Buck: '72 Chevy 1/2T 4x4 shortbox stepside 350/350auto on '84 ralleys and 31/10.5s Angel girl: 67 Cutlass convertible 330, 3spd stick Greener: 90 GMC Jimmy 350/auto Chad Stephens Orleans,NE no name yet: 72 442 under serious construction

Whoa!! now I'm really confused, according to that site, the suffix is as you say. But also the casting number on the back of the block agrees with mortec's information. And according to the date code part of the site, the block was cast in November of 64 and assembled December 31st, maybe the guy doing the stamping was celebrating new years a little early??? This code's all messed up.

The guy I bought my truck from told me it was a 327 turned out to be 307 after running numbers.

according to mortec, the crankshaft casting #2680 is a forged small journal 327 crank.

I had a similar problem with the '78 400 in my '67 C20. The casting number 3951509 says it's a 74-80 2-bolt 400 (or a 70-71 4-bolt 400 but the date code is E38, and it does have 2-bolt mains), but the stamped number F0523TTD says it's an '82 350.
It is a 400 though. Crank, flywheel, and damper all attest to that fact. Plus all the date codes are within a month of 5/78. Good 'ol GM. I decoded the suffix code with an MSA SB Chevy numbers book. If it decodes different for anyone else, let me know. ------------------ 67 C20 '78 400sb 0.030" over, 9:1 cr, CC Xtreme 4x4 254H, port-matched '69 882 heads & stock cast iron intake, rebuilt Q-jet, Summit headers (1 5/8" primaries), true dual 2 1/2" glasspacked exhaust, NP435CR trans, 4.57 Eaton rear end. It's a decent-looking work truck. No top-end, but it's great off the line.
