Transfer case /old faithful

My 2.5 year old son and I took the 68 for a ride to the scale so I can get it regestered, 4800 lbs. On the wy back, smoke filled the cab, I pulled over and couldn't believe my eyes. The transfer case had blown all the gear oil straight up and it was pouring down from the crossmember and everything under was covered. What would cause this? could this just be a seal or Am I in deep.

Richard

Is it coming out the breather on the top of the t case? Is is a auto or manual tranny? I had a 72 4x4 blazer that did the same thing, the seal between the tranny and t case was wasted so it filled the t case with tranny fluid.

It is a auto, the trans fluid level is ok, and the fluid is black gear oil.

Is it a rockwell T221? Was the case hot when it happened? I'd guess it is time for some new seals. While you have it open, you can see if it has any debris in the case.

I'm Not Sure, I'll Check Tonight. Would Driving It In 4 Wheel At High Speed Cause This?

Richard,

You had the truck in 4WD on the pavement?

No, but I wonder if the P.O. or the transport company had put it in 4 to load, and when they unloaded and drove it here in 4wd. This was my first long drive when it erupted, the only other time I've driven it is around the block.

Richard,

I'd be concerned as well. You'd know right away if it was in 4WD while you were driving it. As for previous drivers, no telling. I read your post because I have an Early Bronco than smokes from oil from the transmission/transfer case area as well. It'll get your attention!

Ray,

This thing just blew like a geyser, everything out. I could see under the tunnel where the shifter is that it had blown upward. May even be out of the shifter hole, I can’t tell yet. Also, when I was stopped along the roadside, it was pouring off the cross member and drenching the ground, big puddles! I never knew there could be so much oil in the transfer case. How much do they hold anyway?

Richard,

Not sure how much it holds. My truck is 2WD! The manual I have says "...add oil as required" which means it has a fill hole. You add lube until it won't take anymore.

If the truck is an auto, which has been swapped in from a later model, I am willing to bet it also has a newer t-case (NP205 most likely).
