cab and front clip removal
I am planning on removing a cab and front clip from a chassis this weekend, and was looking for the thread that had the pictures of different ways folks had lifted the cabs?
I am going to attempt to lift the cab and front clip as one assembly, and looking for helpful tips (especially ones with pictures!). Thanks,

I haven't removed a cab with the font clip attached, be careful it's definitely gonna be front heavy. A cab with just doors is front heavy.

i still say the best way in the world to remove a cab is to offer some of the neighbors some free beer

Chainfall and some rigging straps. I can pull a cab, a bed, engine and tranny, do brakes on two wheels at a time. Can't beat it.

Nah, I used the S-10 to pull the frame I was gonna set the cab on under the cab. That's my brother holding the cab while I hook up a chain.

So my list of things to do goes something like this: -buy beer -invite several strong friends over Seriously, in the past someone had pictures of lifting a cab with front clip still attached. I cant find the thread, and dont remember what was said about it. The truck was purple...

I am getting ready to do the same, however, my front end is already removed. I will remove the doors and the windshield in order to reduce the weight.
Recently at a swap meet someone was selling a couple of cabs with doors and all glass removed. I was suprised how light they were and think 2-3 guys could handle onc stripped down. I plan to "hang" from the rafters in my garage after placing a couple of 2 x 4's between the rafters and the floor (1 on each side). Pictures will definitely follow. |

Chris if you are as far as lifting the whole cab and front clip your only 12 bolts and 10 screws away from splitting the two Front Clip/Cab. Makes it much more manageable.

I have pulled a cab with my engine hoist (cherry picker, down here in the south). I couldn't get it up really high...but I got it up enough to get it off the frame and onto a dolly I built at the time.
I need to build another one...as I sold the one I had with the other cab.

Got 'r Done!
I will write a more detailed post about this, maybe for the FAQ, but I did figure out how to lift the cab and front clip as one assembly.
I used an 8 foot 4x4 steel tube (40 pounds) as a crossbar, and welded 1 foot of 2x2 angle about 8 inches from each end to keep the chain from slipping in against the cab. Then I used a chain hoist attached to the rafters in my shed, and my engine hoist to lift the front and keep things level. It took a few trips from the front to the back (I was working by myself today), but it did come off and go up much easier than I thought it would. Enjoy the picture!

I to got my cab lifted today and used a couple of fairly small chain hoists from the rafters in my garage. The 2 x 6 supports were place in the front. I wanted to rotate the cab back in order to sandblast the bottom.
I ended up lifting without removing the winshield, however, the rear glass was taken out for obvious reasons. |
