Wanna know what is worse than rust?
What's worse than rust? ...
Uncovering "creative" repairs from years gone by... I am going to need to do just a bit more work than I realized at first. The following pictures can be called Red Neck Engineering One, Two and Three and pile-o-crap. They could be the center peice for a Jeff Foxworthy joke. Note the ingenious use of chicken wire, the unsparing application of (gee, I don't know... about two pounds maybe?) bondo and the four sheet metal screws holding the entire contraption together. Oh.. yes the seatbelt *was* bondoed in place...

Ok, I thought my truck was bad, but I have to say, that one's got me beat. Rust wise and redneck engineering wise!

Hate to admit it, but I made a temp. fiberglass patch for my floor prior to committing to the restoration. Kept me warmer on those snowy winter drives to work, and the sight of seeing asphalt through the floorboards wasn't very comforting.

That is actually a normal fix back in the 70's. My old 68 Cougar had and formed quarter panels. They started with a sheet of cardboard, and then molded a panel on top of it with plastic filler, then sprayed the inside of the trunk with undercoating.

I can't wait to see what's on the driver's side..
I poked around a bit and discovered that they sprayed pipe insulation foam into the void on that side. Guess I'll have to pull the tank afterall... |

technicality
Just so the "rednecks to be" know what to buy, that wire mesh stuff is called hardware cloth. Chicken wire has more of an expanded oval or hex shape to it.

my first cab had cab corners made of spray foam, luckily for me the day i discovered it, i found a cab a guy in town was selling, i just ditched it and moved on

Those repairs are unbelievable! Andy...bondo and cardboard? My '67 had fiberglass fender repairs and fiber glass cab corners! Here I thought it was a prototype...LOL! I tossed the fenders...too far gone but am going to fix the cab once I get my current cab project done! Where does it end?

My rockers and cab corners are mono foam and aluminum foil, the floor on the drivers side was cardboard wrapped in a garbage bag and beside the gas tank on the passenger side was a garbage bag filled with mono foam to fill the giant hole. The lower front fenders are rags soaked in resin, and the box floor is a piece of roof tin siliconed in place. Thank god for repro parts and parts trucks.

On this.. does anyone have any pictures of the sill area with the carpet back and sill plates off? I could use a reference when I start rebuilding the area. |

I'll look again tonight and see what still looks baffling. On the driver's side I am simply going to fix it but I am planning a small mod for the passenger side. I want to make the channel that runs along the edge of the cab considerably larger than stock to facilitate hiding a bunch of cables.
In the absolute rear corner of the cab... Does the floor of the cab slope off and meet the outer cab corner wall at a point? If yu look at my pictures at the top; did the necks have the basic shape right? This isn't an area you ever really study in detail until you find something like this. lol Should the cross section look like: (ignore the dots.. they are place holders..) |..____ |/ |
