New Guy
I just picked up a 71 short stepside a couple weeks ago.
It's a rust bucket, but it was cheap. It's a 250 6cyl and 3 speed manual. Two options came on the truck, extra gauges and a rear bumper. I've already started cleaning it up and taking apart the bed. I also have a 94 Caprice wagon and got a lot of great info from the Impalassforum.com while working on that car. I'm hoping to get the same type of info here for my truck. I haven't totally decided what the plan is for it. On one hand it's all original (except the shifter was moved to the floor), and I'm thinking restoration to original glory. On the other hand it would be great to have a classic look and a modern drivetrain (say an LT1 and all from a 9C1 cop car). I'll take some picture before I tear it apart and as I work on it. And so it begins!! |

Welcome from Canada, go with the classic and modern drivetrain. As long as you don't modify the Cab (like shorten it 2"s) you can always go back to Classic/classic.

Welcome to the board from the shadows of Lambeau Field!
I'd keep the classic looks, but modernize the drive train. Just remember it's cheaper to buy a new cab than restore the one you have, unless you are handy with a welder. Good luck with the new project! We must have pics!! |

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome.
I just noticed there was a welcome area, sorry. dtlilly, I know you can't buy a new cab, so I'm guessing you mean find another cab with less rust. So far it looks like the rockers, cab corners and a couple of the cab supports are in need of replacing. Eveything else on the cab doesn't look too bad. My son can weld and we're both looking forward to trying our hand at replacing some panels and a little body work. I'm getting real good at getting rusty bolt heads out of my sockets after they snap off!! |

Welcome to the forums. I hope we are better than the caprice forum, I like to think this is the best forum to belong to on the web, and so far, no one has proved me wrong.
My opinion on your rig, do what ever you want... a full blown 100% resto would be kinda booring on a low option inline truck in my opinion. But a short step lowered a bit with some torque thrust rims....say 16 or 17 inch... and a mean small block or even big block...THAT would be sweet. While I do think there are certian trucks to restore to show room condition, I don't think yours is the one to go that route with. But that's just me. And as far as the cab goes, you CAN get a brand new fiberglass cab. I don't have the link, i remember they were mega expensive though. |

Welcome from NJ! And also from a fellow Caprice Wagon owner(ex, actually). The ImpSS forum was good but this forum by far blows that one away.
An LT1 or an LS1 with a 6 speed would be sweet in that stepper Ya goin' to Carlilse Truck Nat'ls on Aug 5-7? L8R - Joe

Don't think so, only day I can go is Sunday and no one sticks around long that day. I was at the GM Nationals, go every year. Not many trucks at the GM show. There was a couple of clean cabs for sale, he should be at the truck show. I didn't get a price though. I'll be at fall Englishtown. |

Wow, a whole fiberglass body (cab, tilt front end, and bed) for only $9897!!
Throw in a crate motor an all the other new bits and pieces and I could have a brand new 71 pickup for around $30,000. Hey, that's still cheaper than an SSR! Guess I'll stick with the hard (cheaper) way for now. |

I too was a member at the Impala SS forums, and was very happy with it overall. This board is incredible, I think you'll love it here. Welcome from Central Illinois, from a fellow owner of a short/step!
