I have a 70 chevy that I need to get the sterring wheel plate off. The only problem is that is thought I knew how but I was wrong. The three bolt holes that are in the steering mount are stripped and I want to replace it. But how to I get if off. I am no even sure that the steering column is origional any help please. Auto Zone have me a puller for a retainer plate but it will not thread onto the center column bolt.

That is an adapter and it looks like it is made out of aluminum. I would drill and tap the three holes for the next larger thread size and hook your puller up to it. Spray the taper down with a penetrating oil. Once you have the puller hooked up, tighten the center bolt of the puller and give it a quick rap with a hammer. The aluminum may be seized to the steel shaft.

Good luck!

The puller is shaped like a "Y" with a threaded hole in the center. Each arm of the Y is a long slot, so the bolts will fit bout any pattern.

It's a catastrophic success.

You need a puller like this. The shaft is splined and tapered so they seldom just slip off after the nut is off. you may can use a 2or3 claw puller if you can grab a hold of the edge, just watch your plastic blinker assy.
