Feedback on 68 396

I have a 71Chevy stepside C10 I am building and have the chance at an original 1968 C20 lwb with original 396 for cheap. Anyone have one or know how good a motor this was. HP ratings. Overall decent motor or great. Looking for feedback. What would you all pay for a running 68 C20 truck. Front clip is good, cab rusted and bed shot.

This truck is said to run fine with no problems. Havent heard it yet. I am debating because I have a 77 Chevy with a 454 in my yard that runs but needs a rebuild (bad knock)

Let me know what you think.

My standard response to a running rusted truck in WA State...$500! There are so many running and non-running trucks around here that one really doesn't know until you see the pics. I have seen running trucks that are not worth $500 from the coastal areas...totally rusted and dented! WE NEED PICS!

Having said all that...I just bought a completely rust free truck without engine and tranny that had a bunch of new parts in new packaging worth more than $1800. So every situation is different.

Can't beat a BB, impressive torque from the factory. My 70 GMC 402 has 310 hp, can't remember the torque, but you can FEEL it!! My opinion, it's a great engine, 396 or 402. BB engine alone that needs rebuilding goes for about $600 here. If it's CHEAP, buy it, use it later....somewhere. Greg

Buy the truck as if you are buying the motor and the rest for a few good parts.$300-$500 would be right.Although the motor runs good,it`s an old motor and it`s present condition should be viewed as somewhat temporary and mostly a good complete core.Go for it!!I would.

396 C20 and C30 Truck options in '68 were as follows:

L66 (2-barrel)
275 hp gross (197 hp net)
390 ft-lb gross (335 ft-lb net)

L47 (4-barrel)
310 hp gross (242 hp net)
400 ft-lb gross (350 ft-lb net)

The NET numbers were slightly different on the C10.

Well,
Just called the guy and I am going to get the 68 C20 truck tomorrow. Once I get it home I will try and post some pics. I am buying the truck just for the BB 396/400 tranny combo, hood, 67 fenders some dash parts. I also noticed it had what looked like a dana 60 rearend. Had a bucket seat combo but guy change it out with a full bench some time back(darn).

Like I really need another truck, but price is within what you all said in above posts.

Thanks for the HP torque ratings. Thats one thing I needed.
