How do I take off the pitman arm?
I can't seem to get the pitman arm off of the gear box.

or buy yourself a decent puller, a handy tool to have and will last a lifetime, about the same price as going to a movie with popcorn and soda

you may want to check out harbor freight too if you can't borrow one they are usually fairly "cheap" and for no more than the average guy will use it,will suffice.not a place to shop if you are making a living with your tools but generally good enuff for home use

go to the auto parts store, and buy a pitman arm puller(under 20 dollars). when you use it, tighten it up real snug, then hit the pitman arm with a hammer. if you try to pull it off by tighting the bolt on the puller all the way, you will break the bolt on the puller. i know because i did it.

Hydraulic press, got mine at the Freight! Saved hundreds of dollars by using it to press out all the bushings on just one car when upgrading to poly bushings. Plus it's handy for all sorts of stuff, just like this.
'Course the pitman puller is easier if you're not taking the gearbox off the truck :P |

I used one from AutoZone. I bought my new Steering Gear Box from there. They basically have you put down a $20 deposit. When you bring it back, they give you your money back.

Well, the gear box is off the truck. I was going to rebuild it but I have no clue what I'm doing and there is a guy here who said he sell me one for $50 plus exchange. We only have an Advance in town and the guy there said they didn't have a loaner tool to take it off so I didn't know if they made a loaner tool for taking it off or there was some other trick.

Yeah, get the pitman puller, except...after putting it in place, tighten it firmly to remove the pitman arm, good and tight.......then leave it alone for a while, after about 15-minutes, tighten it up again, it will pull it off....wd-40 the shaft if it needs it.

Thanks guys
I went and picked up the used power steering gear box from a local parts dealer here and the Pitman arm was already on it and seemed to be in decent condition. So after all that I didn't need to remove it. Bryan
