gas tank pick-up tubes

My 67's (factory V8) fuel tank pick-up tube (the part that goes into the tank) has a 5/16" tube. Im looking for a pick-up assembly that will drop in but has a 3/8" pick-up tube. Ive heard that the 6 cyl ones have a 3/8" tube and the V8 ones had 5/16". Can anyone confirm or deny this?, it doesnt really make any sense to me.

2 bbl had 5/16...4 bbl engines had 3/8. Thats how I've understood it.

Did it really make that much difference to change tube sizes?

In stock form...I just don't see it. 5/16 can deliver quite a bit of fuel.
