what starter do you use ?
OK, after 2 reman. starters this summer I give up !! These things work ok for about 2-3 months and then crap out. My truck runs a 350/350 and the starter has the staggered bolt pattern ( 168 tooth right? ) The flywheel looks good no missing teeth ect, new redtop Otima battery,
new pos/neg cables/new wiring going down to the starter and a starter brace I've tried every combo of shims the starters are just crap! I'LL TAKE ANY AND ALL HELP YOU GUYS CAN GIVE.... JOHN

Have you checked the alignment of the starter? They don't necessarily make noise if they are not aligned correctly.
Also...you did not mention how good the grounds are? Are you using the star washers from battery to fender, body to engine, & battery negative to engine? |

Can you still buy an OEM unit from GM? FWIW, mine has been pretty durable. I still have the original starter, and it's been my DD for over 28 years, so it's started at least twice every day. Well, to be honest, I did replace the Bendix drive one time several years ago...

Thanks for all the replies. I've I checked all the grounds they are good. I've checked the alignment over and over and it checks out at an 1/8" (paper clip). The starters start out great then all of a sudden (1-3 months) they start banging the flywheel. I think I'm going aftermarket just not sure which one.

Have you thought about the junkyard? I ONLY use the cast iron snout starters....and rebuild as needed. |

I wouldnt use a reman starter because most times they only replace the part(s) that are bad. So you could be buying a reman starter with 1,000,000 starts on it and they just changed a gear and cleaned it up with all the other parts in it ready to go out! I use the chrome mini!! Spins the motor no problem!

I must have went thru about 8 starters in a 6 month period on my 383 stroker, I tried junkyard ones, a couple I rebuilt myself, a few remanufactured ones, one hi torque mini that I just couldnt get to fit right despite using the shims, So I went down to O Reilys and got one of their new I believe power master, and havent had any problems I also added a starter heat shield cause Im running headers. Now no problem with starter at all.....
