qjets are decent carbs.. have heard holleys are hard to keep tuned.. but not personal experience there.... what kind of manifold is it? just cause its an aftermarket edelbrock doesnt mean its good for the truck..

Personally I'd go with a Q-jet or since you're experienced with older fords, an adapter plated Holley 4412 500cfm 2 barrel. I'm not a fan of the edelbrock carter deals.

If it is a stock motor you could go with the q-jet. When properly rebuilt they are pretty good carbs. The other option I would recommend is a 600 or 650 with vacuum secondary. If you drive it daily put the electric choke on it since I'm sure it can get little cold in Washington. If it is a fair weather truck you can forget the choke if you want.

I've never had the problems with Holley carbs that lots of people talk about, but a double pumper is definately not the way to go on one of these trucks. I'd get either a 600 cfm Holley with an electric choke and vacuum secondaries, a 600 or 650 Edelbrock or a Quadrajet. I've run them all and the Quadrajet gave me the best mileage but not by much. I have the easiest time tuning Holley carbs and ran one on my 84 for 8 years before I switched to fuel injection last fall.

What kind of mileage are you making now? Are you sure the rest of the engine is all up to snuff? Vacuum leaks, ignition problems, transmission or even tire pressures can all affect mileage too. In the days of $3 a gallon gas, it's worth it to look over everything!

Just thought of something else. The quadrajet and Holly mount differently. The quad mount are nearly a perfect square as the holly mounts are rectangular. The manifold may dictate the carb selection unless you get an adapter.

yeah, never thought of that.i got to find some way to figure out what exact motor and intake this thing has.have been told two different block vin locations, one was on the front of the head, other was back by where bell housing hooks up.as for the intake its got edelbrock on it,not a whole lot else like some others i've seen.

The number on the back by the bell housing is the number to determine what the block is. There may be a number between the carb and distributor on the intake to tell you what the intake is. If not you'll have to look at the shape of the intake specifically the area directly under under the carb. Where the carb bolt to the intake and runs down into the runners. If it is square it could be Performer RPM. If there is a gap under that area it could be a Victor Jr. or an RPM Airgap. If it is not squared off then it is more than likely a Performer.

Hello all, new user to the board, i had the q-jet on the old 305 in my 83, i gave it to a buddy. I now have a Holly intake with a 600 CFM electric choke, as far as tuning, it's pretty simple to lean out the 2 banks evenly and richen the mixture till it sounds good. Not to mention it does pretty good for a $250 dollar investment.

thanks for the good info everybody.when i get some time,i'll figure out what i got.also post some pics if i can figure out how.i got a new problem with radiator,it needs replaced and i'm going to have to reroute trans cooler lines to other side of radiator,as this truck used to be a 5.7 diesel i just learned. by that ,and the fact it has hydo boost brakes instead of vacum assist.now some mysteries are begining to make sense.but hey..thats why i bought it.something to play around with.

Quadrajets are Spreadbore (front mounting closer together and the rear farther apart. Edelbrock performer Carbs and Holleys are Sqaure bore (all the mounting points are same distance apart).

Anyway to post a picture of the engine?

I believe it is a vacuum secondary, not a double pumper. It appears to be a dual feed but if you notice the black circular piece with four bolts in the right rear of the pic it appears to be the vacuum diaphram. As for the intake it a little hard to tell but if I had to guess it may be the Performer.

With those centerbolt valve covers, you engine is an '87 or newer. Well, at least the heads are.

yeah i'm trying to get to all the block vin's.the one back by the drivers side bell housing flange says. 57lgsgi.which ,if i have them correct.should be a 350.the numbers on the pad on passenger side behind alternator are vh311954. which i think means built march 11 of 95 i don't know what others mean?i think theres another group of vin #'s back side of passenger side head.i was told its some late model camaro motor.they must of altered it for a carb.i just wanna find out what i'm buying parts for.

Holley Street Avenger. Or Demon. Sort of like badone07 not a fan of the Edelbrock. A good Q-jet is getting hard to find.
