style/type of brake booster
OK guys who as installed power brake booster that wasn't a stock booster. What did you use, what did it come off of, or what could be used? I know alot of things interchange but somethings do and not everyone knows about it. So if anyone has done this or has ideas let me know. Thanks.

Power booster
I just pulled a power booster off of a 71 chevelle yesterday. The power booster to firewall bracket is a bit different, but 2 of the bolt holes do line up and so does the booster. I will be modifing the bracket and putting it on this weekend. I'll let you know how it turns out.

P/s box from an 86 Chevy truck will give you a better ratio (I think it's one less turn from end to end).

I installed a disk brake f/e and booster from a 77 Chev truck. It was a 'Big Ten' truck if I recall correctly- basically a 3/4T truck I think. Anyway, later I swapped out for a 72 booster, but just yesterday went back to the 77 booster. Make sure that you use the correct proportioning valve that matches the booster and m/c, otherwise you'll get stopping problems- either too short or not quick enough.
Also, I used the ps box off the same 77 truck. It's about 3 turns lock to lock and is basically a quick ratio box. I really like it!

Kits are available to install new corvette boosters and master cylinders into 67-72 GM trucks. Comes with vette dual booster, master, brackets and small parts to mate, though I've never installed one. Cost around $250.
The main advantage is the smaller booster the vette uses. Dual diaphram.

I finsished putting the 71 chevelle booster in. It works great!! The The shaft that goes from the booster to the brake pedal also had to be modified to work though. The only problem I have is the shifter linkage hits the booster so I cannot get it into park. I read a few other posts where people had this problem and were able to fix it with some adjustment of the linkage. Haven't tried it yet, will wait till tomorrow.

I had a 86 IROC I used for parts to build my wifes IROC and there was a power booster on it. So I took it and with some modifying I put it on my 69 GMC. I was going to use the camaro m/c but it's metric fittings and I didn't want the headach of making two lines to fit so I used the m/c off the 79 caddy I got the disc rear of of. The mounting had to be modified and so did the rod from the booster to the pedal, I also had to re-drill the hole in the pedal because of the angle of the rod. I thought it was a little stiff at first but when I compared it to my wife's IROC it was about the same. I guess I was just so used to having 4 wheel manual disc brakes. Well today was the first time I "road tested" it. Me and my wife and son went down the road in it and the first time I hit the brakes it like to threw us forward! I looked at her and said" It'll stop now!". I got to get used to the quicker stopping now since 3 and overdrive went out in my little van I drive to work. The bad thing is going from about 22 MPG down to about 10 or 12 in my truck. It's got about a 10 gallon tank and the first fill up back last year took $13.00. Today it took $27.00 at $2.74 per gal! Man that sucked!
P.S. no probs with shifter.

I got a brake boster from a 1991 chevy 1/2 ton pickup. Two of the holes in the fire wall lined up with the ones on the brake booster. but had to modify for the bottom two holes, also had to re center the hole for the shaft that goes from the pedal to the booster. the linkage all cleared but i got a column from a 1976 van for the tilt. its alot cleaner and gets rid of the braket that putts the stock booster farther from the fire wall.

Here's a pic of mine mounted. the camaro booster had four studs but I knocked the bottom two out so it would mount on the two existing bottom holes, the top two studs went in two holes I drilled through the firewall and brake pedal bracket . The rod out of the booster was lengthened using a brake rod from another 67-72 truck, and the hole was re-drilled slightly lower on the pedal so the rod would be straight due to the angle of the booster. It all works great and stops ALOT better than the manual brakes did.

What year caddy did you get the rear disc brake stuff from and how much work was that to perform? Did you get the entire unit or just put the disk brake stuff on the end of the tubes? My '71 is a leaf spring truck, only one i have seen around here, not sure if it will take the whole rear diff if that is what you did.
