I Can't belive IT
I took my 69 out for one last run before the cold hits and she let me down big time.I ran to town and as I got to the exit I noticed a valve tappet ticking no problem I'll just go to friends and re-adjust valves OK tick goes away.Go do some erands and head back home (30 miles)get about 10 miles from town and the ticking comes back and progressively gets worse then all power goes away,Pulled off side of road and thought I broke valve spring pulled the valve cover off and I noticed the valve like broke the bottom of the keeper off and bent the valve. Will take the head off this weekend and hopefully not see any harm on the piston side.Man this motor only has about 500 miles on it 327 with the 461 fuelie heads any one else had this problem?I can't figure out why this happened.Any advice or comments to help me out besides buying some new heads that I can't afford. That and thanks for letting me vent

Re: I Can't belive IT
if its the keeper that broke.a local engine builder here told me that it was just one of those freak things.he said he has only seen it happen 3/4 times.
i had one break on me a few years ago with about 800 miles on it.got lucky and found all the pieces still in head.put new valve/spring and rocker/push rod just to be safe.50000 hard miles later have had no problems with it

Re: I Can't belive IT
Looks pretty good on the piston side,It took a little tiny piece off the side of the relief hmmmm. Now what,The piece looks like a finger nail only real small other than that looks good.I guess I'll wait and see what my local experts say or you guys can chime in.

Re: I Can't belive IT
Pull that piston, because even a little contact can crack a piston. It is easier to be safe than sorry and you'll have the piece of mind that you know it is OK and can drive it with confidence.

Re: I Can't belive IT
Yeah I belive I'll pull it all and take it to a shop and have them go through it and let them balance it.I allso did not have a bolt in the crank for the Harmonic balancer not drilled for one,I was able to wiggle it off by hand and the key was broke.Back to square 1
